Last season, I said that Andre Roy was the worst enforcer in hockey.

I would like to take that back, and put Andrew Peters up there. To my understanding, Peters is considered a heavyweight. However, when he goes with the big guys, all he wants to do is grab, pull , and hold on for dear life. Worst, and possibly most boring "heavyweight" in the NHL. I've been hearing a lot of bashing of Riley Cote, who has maybe 1-2 wins this year, if that. And I'll admit, he has been getting beat a ton. But there's 2 things I'll say in his defense:
1. He's probably one of the most entertaining fighters in the NHL, likes to hold and throw, not wrestle.
2. I don't consider him a heavyweight, but he'll go with anyone, no matter who they are.
He lost to guys like BGL, Brashear, Parros, and Goddard, but he has no problem fighting and wanted to actually throw with them, not hug & hold.
Thoughts? Who's your worst this season?

I have to agree with your on Peters. He started off this year looking to throw bombs, but he looked HORRIBLE against Goddard the other day. It is tough to have a bad fight with Goddard, he truly likes to throw bombs and take them. Zac Stortini is AWEFUL to watch. He doesnt do anything but hug.

Nice topic!

Eric

Are you pulling the old "Huggy Bear" line out of the archives for Brashear? If so, I'm not sure how Cote ended up with two black eyes and some heavy duty stitch work if Brashear was just hugging. ;)

I'll give Cote credit, anyone that takes the beat downs he does and still wants more is either a gamer, or just plain stupid, not quite sure where he falls just yet. I guess if I could make the money he is, and all I had to do was drop the gloves and eat some fist on a nightly basis, I might give it a shot too.

He's not a heavy, but the guy I think is a joke is Mike Brown from Vancouver. This is not the WWE, it's the NHL. Enough with the leg grab takedowns, if you want to be a tough guy drop the gloves and throw a punch or two. The kid is borderline embarrasing.

I'd consider Cote as more of a middle weight then anything. Maybe an uppermiddleweight since he will dance with heavies and lower. And he is by far not the worst fighter. Two words... Zack Stortini

Stortini is not really a heavyweight. That is why the Oilers brought in Strudwick. Stortini is a middle weight energy guy who does his job well. Most often, his fights come about because he throws a massive hit on somebody. A lot of other guys wouldn't even defend themselves, but Stortini drops them no matter who it is. He is overmatched by the true heavyweights of the NHL, because he isn't one.

4Ant4, I'm not pulling that on Brash at all. If he goes with a dude that likes to stand back and throw, he can definitely do it. He has been more of a hugger than he was earlier, but if a guy is insistent on throwing like Cote is, he can definitely handle his business.

Brashear uses the same tactic that Ruutu does, and Probert did for a long time, Brashear and Ruutu go farther with it though. Probert used to stay in close, eat a few to get him good and angry, and once the other guy started to tire out a bit he would unload on them. Brashear and Ruutu do the same thing, but they tend to hug a lot more which has turned off a lot of fight fans. It works most of the time though so I understand why they do it.

As for Andre Roy, to me he is pretty much a useless waste of a roster spot. I'd rather give that spot (and money) to a good young kid who deserves a shot at making the roster and may actually contribute from time to time.

Cote falls into the same category for me. I know the Flyers have plenty of good young prospects, I just don't see why they have to carry a guy like Cote. Yes, they unloaded Downie who is a huge bust in my opinion, but they still have Gratton, Asham, and Hartnell, so what good is Cote? They don't even need Gratton to be honest, Hartnell and Asham can hold their own with most guys in the league, and will stand up for their teammates at any time. Richards has also shown in the past he will go if needed. Hartnell and Asham both can contribute offensively, so there really is no need for a Gratton or Cote with the big club. The Flyers have enough offense to contend in the East as it is, if they dumped Cote and Gratton to the minors and brought up a couple more skill players, they could be downright scary. I think that's why the Flyers continue to get the "thug" tag thrown at them, when they carry so many combatants, they pretty much bring it on themselves.

I had never really seen him go but watched the Peters/Goddard tilt the other night and just shook my head. Not sure if that is his typical fight or not (by this thread that seems to be the case) but he had his seatbelt on the whole time and was begging to get to the ice.

On a side note - I am so happy the Nucks picked up O'Brien - that boy just likes to chuck 'em.

Cote stays on the roster because Hartnell's best used when he's not in the penalty box, and Asham can't/won't fight (he didn't really wanna fight Brash the other night). Not a big Asham fan, and he's definitely not earning his contract. Gratton...don't know why he's there. Cote is at least entertaining, but i agree that they don't need Cote, Gratton, and Asham.

Peters is an excellent choice for worst enforcer. Generally useless all around. If he played more, I'd say Ryan Hollweg from the Leafs. I've never seen someone get beat up so often.

Roy definitely is brutal, I don't think he has won a fight yet. Although his effort against Boogaard was encouragable.

Worst fighter? I don't have the answer on who that is.

Most Overrated? Big George Laraque, seriously has he fought what 2 times this year?

His skills are still there though. He doesn't strike fear into opponents like he used to because they don't expect him to fight, but he will still take out pretty much anyone who he drops them with. I wish Georges would still fight, I always loved watching him destroying other heavyweights.

I should say most disappointing, not worst.
