Leafs Aquire Kris Versteeg From Chicago

I agree, I think Burke will wait and then move Kaberle to one of the teams that miss out on a big D signing. After the FA frenzy the value of D will go up due to these guys signing big contracts.

Best chance for a Kabby trade will be in the next couple of days after the big name free agent Ds are signed and the teams that missed out need to fill the holes.

I dunno about this one....I like Kris Versteeg but he always struck me as a 'role' guy, a guy who gets better when surrounded by skilled players. He has some skill but I'm not sure he's the kind of guy the Leafs need right now.

At the very least Burke is putting together a team that Leafs fans will be excited to watch at the start of next season.

I realize the Hawks have to move money for the cap space but this a BIG upgrade for the Leafs.

I think the Hawks could have got more.

The Leafs add a bona fide young (only 24) offensive threat in Versteeg (20+ goals twice) who should greatly help the club score more goals and he can play all three forward positions. Sweatt just finished his college career is un-signed, projected to be a depth two-way forward.

Stalberg has some scoring upside, but really his most important trait for the Hawks at this time is he is cheap $$ for the cap. Paradis (1st rd /09) could be a depth center with some scoring and DiDomenico (6th rd /07) is a long range prospect.

I don't see Stalberg getting any better then Versteeg. Vertseeg is also a good 2 way player plus he can play in a lot of different situations. Great move for the leafs.

Tony I agree, they have too keep Sharp & Bolland :)

I would be OK with Sharp moving on if the right deal came along, Bolland is an absolute must keep player. I like Sharp and would love to see him stay, but they still have work to do and if Sharp moves on I will not be too upset as long as it is a deal that makes sense and will help them in the future.

Versteeg is over-rated, but fit in well in the system that was in place in Chicago. I don't think he's any better than Lee Stempniak was, and look how THAT worked out for the Leafs. I forsee this going the same way. I certainly wouldn't expect any more than 40-45 points from him at best. That being said, I hope it works out for both teams. Seems to be a pretty even trade.

^ The scoring potential might be equal when comparing Versteeg to Stempniak, but that's where that comparison ends. Versteeg is a better skater, penalty killer, younger and plays with more of an edge. Stempniak did benefit from being used properly in st louis and in phoenix however, but Versteeg is more of a complete player and doesn't need a specific situation to excel in. Just my opinion of course.

^ Versteeg will also provide at least 1 giveaway per game that will lead to an odd-man rush when he tries to make a flashy play to enter the offensive zone. Granted he was guilty of that less often this year than last year.

Once a year he'll also leave a Red Wing in a pool of his own blood, when a Red Wing picks a fight with the little guy and has no idea what the little guy does in the off season. :giggity:

With Ladd now being traded to ATL I'm thinking the trades are done

John Mitchell did that once per shift last year, so Versteeg isn't going to be that out of place in TO.

I hope you're right.

From Blackhawks NHL.com site ... July 2nd

"At this point, we're content with where we're at roster-wise," said Bowman, who now has moved five members of the Hawks' Cup championship team in the last week to stay under the League's salary cap. "Now we can focus on what’s out there on the free agent market. We have alleviated the situation we were in. I think from now on, we can look to see if we can find maybe some pieces to add to the mix."
