Leafs sign Cujo and Jeff Finger

On the bright side, I can't wait to play the Capitals and hear the play by play guy say, "Finger covered by Semin"

There were plenty of times during last year when you would hear the play by play announcer for the Avs say "Finger bangs him in the corner"

I giggled everytime.

He is a good player, but no 3.5M a season good.

Ya, the Hagman deal is very good.

Real solid, 2-way player, with excellent speed, can play either wing, responsible in his own end, not shy of the physical work (though he's not going to fight), can pot 20-ish goals, and a very hard worker- solid work ethic. Not to mention he's dependable as he hasn't missed a game in 3 years.

The one thing Fletcher is trying to do is change the culture. No more lazy punks like O'Neill and Wellwood, now theres incredible hard workers like Mayers, Finger, Hagman, etc. Guys that never take a shift off.

Good point indeed. Wellwood was a lazy butt and so where the rest of the guys you mentioned. Finger might not have the most talent in the world, but he is big and has some scoring ability. 8 goals w/o even playing on the PP is pretty decent..

Hagman has always intrigued me as a player even in his florida days when he was under-used. He showed off his true colors last year and had a very solid year. Let's hope he can contribute the same here in Toronto..

I'm mixed.

Cujo.....Great to see him back. Back with the Cujo Jerseys

Hagman.......Very Nice. You guys have a point about work ethic. He won't score you a load but he has potential for 30

Finger........What? I know nothing about him.....I have to trust Cliff as we can't use anymore garbage. We just threw out some and more to be collected. Hope he didn't add to that pile!!!!!

Sounds like they'll let Pogge play the majority of games for the Marlies this year and then bring him up next year for the last year of Toskala's contract to back him up. They probably have him projected to start in 2010-11, right around the time they should have a couple of this and next year's draft picks getting into the lineup. By then, the team is going to look A LOT different, which was the point of this whole rebuilding process.

Hate to say it, but we are probably looking at at least 5 years before we have a team to get excited about again.

I'm smelling Pogge as starter and Cujo as backup...weren't there rumours of Toskala being shopped?

Fletcher has said that Pogge will get 60 games in the AHL. He has also said Vesa is the number 1 here.

There have been zero rumours of Toskala being shopped.

Where do people come up with this stuff?

Relax man - just something I heard around work yesterday - didn't say it was true, but that scenario above made some sense IF it was.

I don't want Toskala gone - loved him last season! :)

Fletcher about Finger:

http://www.hockeybuzz.com/blog.php?post_id=16019

A lot of people in Toronto are asking me, 'Who the hell is Jeff Finger?' simply because they haven't seen him play," Fletcher scoffed. "But, [former Colorado coach] Joel Quennville told me he was one of the five best defensemen in the Western Conference last year. He played against the best players on every other team. [Leafs' coach] Ron Wilson told me he was always on the ice in San Jose games against Joe Thornton. Same thing with Jarome Iginla in Calgary, or the Sedin twins [Henrik and Daniel] in Vancouver. Quennville said [Finger] was his best defenseman in the last half of the year."

As for Hagman, Fletcher said, "he brings speed to our line-up; he's a good penalty killer, and he scored 27 goals for Dallas. There was a fair amount of competition [to sign] Niklas, and there was about 15 teams after Finger. So, we think we did alright."

15 teams were after Finger. Likely because they saw him as a great value pickup... but his price obviously sky rocketed because of the competition.

I really think Ron Wilson had a big part in the Finger signing. If the cap keeps going up and up, the salary won't matter as much as long as the guy can play, so I have been trying to reserve my judgement on this one.

I like the addition of Cujo, I think he will stick around as goalie coach down the road. I think they over paid for Finger but who knows, it seems like everyone got overpaid during this FA frenzy. The Hagman signing was a surprise but when you can get a solid 2 way player who can score 25 goals its a bonus. We all know that the leafs need more 2 way players.

Why does everyone pronounce Alexander Semin incorrectly?
The Leafs are absolute idiots. I could sit here all day talking about how ridiculous some of thee moves are, but everyone already agrees so I will leave this one alone.

I like the signing, but I'd rather have Stuart for $250,000 more a season (not possible, I know, but one can dream).

I think this deal will look much better in two years time.

I like Cujo as a cheap(er) backup.

Still won't be a parade on Yonge Street this year....

I'm a leaf fan and even I see how stupid this deal is. You would of thought they learned there lesson signing guys on potential and for big money and for multiple years . It's a trifecta of stupid that we all know will come back to bite them in the ***

Every time you think they might be on track for SOMETHING, they make a signing like this. Hey, Finger might work out, but right now it looks silly. Methinks they were competing against themselves again.

Don't let the Leafs get a good team, this is much more amusing.

I'm sure Fletcher knows what he's doing. Finger won't be the solution to anything, but the Leaf's needed more depth on the blue line and Finer isn't a bad guy to add. You need to look past the salary, it doesn't mean much of anything. The Leaf's have money to spend and they spent it on someone they thought could contribute to their team. Look more at the Hagman signing. That's a complete steal. He contributed more to the Stars than Malone did to the Penguins and he signed for almost half the amount Malone did...Hagman will impress and Finger is just a guy that will fill in the depth chart on D..At worst..

Finger himself won't be a detriment to the Leafs.

His contract however.....

The Hagman signing I really liked. This should take some of the pressure of Blake, and maybe finally give Steen the kick in the rear end he badly needs.
