Leafs trade picks for Anaheim's Andersen

Now if you really wanted to have fun with this thread, you could have posted "Leafs Trade First Round Pick for Goalie!" and just omitted any reference to it being the #30. LOL

Goaltending market is swamped, I think the leafs are stuck with Bernier. I think the Flames would rather have Fleury, Bishop, Reimer, or even Halak than Bernier.
 
Solid young goalie, solid pick up. Hopefully it works out. I haven't seen him play slot but over the past few years I have heard nothing but positive things about him.
 
There had been rumours that they've wanted him for a while now, so they got their guy! They still have their 2nd rounder this year, so all is good.
 
IMO, this is a steal. Good for the Leafs, and they signed him to a cap friendly hit too. Like the trade and the contract!
 
Bernier has only one more year under contract. Could be moved to a contender looking for depth at next year's trade deadline.

There likely isn't much of a market for him - Anaheim is in a bad spot with the pending expansion draft. It's a good problem to have but they were going to have to choose between protecting Gibson or Andersen anyway so getting a couple picks back for the one that was going to be exposed is probably about as high as they could hope.
 
I just wonder how Andersen will do behind a much shakier defense. He is very good; however, I think the jury is still out on if he will be a top flight goalie.

I think he's underrated. Ducks weren't scoring at all in the beginning of the season. He had one of the best GAA, but had one of the worst winning percentages.

When the Ducks started scoring in the new year, they ended up winning the division.

Plus don't underestimate what can happen during this off-season. Because of the salary cap and the expansion draft, there are some pretty good deals to be had. If you have higher and more draft picks, a prudent GM will be able to get some very good return this year.


It also makes the Kessel trade a lot less lopsided, especially after inking Andersen to a 5 year deal.

Martin Jones was traded last year for a perceived higher 2016 1st round and a unsigned prospect. Regardless of what Ducks got in return, it's low.

It all depends what you are able to do with that pick. Just because it's a 1st round pick, it doesn't mean it's going to be a gem, especially since it's the 30th pick overall.

There have been gems drafted in the 2nd round and later, so it's up to the scouting staff to find that diamond in the rough.
 
The leafs need a goalie and won't likely get any better than Anderson with that pick and certainly not NHL ready. Great deal and certainly helps both clubs.
