Lundqvist Re-Signs with Rangers

Thanks for the post,I find it interesting but a question arises;Do you think he is worth more than that new contract?

Absolutely! He is clearly a franchise goaltender and THE fan favorite here. I could easily see a $4-5 million/year longterm deal if he puts in another solid season with a good playoff effort.

He and the Rangers just needed to come to a one-year agreement that met his salary needs while allowing the Rangers to field their team under the cap. The Rangers have a few players coming off the books next year that would allow for a larger Lundqvist contract.

Whoops! Looks like this is a 1 year / $4.5 million deal. So he's basically signed in the range that I figured he'd get next year.

Once January 1st rolls around, then they can sign him to a longterm extension that will count against near season's cap. Hopefully, Sather doesn't wait until the offseason to work a longterm deal for risk of a "Vanek" type RFA offer sheet.

According to tsn.ca

Goaltender Henrik Lundqvist will get US$4.25 million in a one-year NHL contract with the New York Rangers.

The 25-year-old Swede, who was a restricted free agent before the new deal was announced Wednesday, made $817,000 last season when he won 37 games - second most in one season by a Rangers goaltender since Mike Richter won 42 during the team's 1993-94 championship season.

What's with the quarter mil difference? ;)

Rangers are spending alot of money on Lundqvist, Jagr, Gomez, and Drury. Here's hoping the low salary cap guys can mature enough to help them suceed. who do you think will be playing with the rags and could see some nice ice time? Dawes? Prucha? Immonen? Anyone?

It really boils down to what the Rangers decide to do with RFA's such as Sean Avery and Marcel Hossa. If one or both of those guys are let go, then younger guys could see more ice time.

Petr Prucha should get regular playing time regardless.

Ryan Callahan should also get regular playing time.

Jarkko Immonen is playing overseas this year.

Nigel Dawes is a nice player, but I can't see him getting a regular shift unless injuries occur.

Alexei Cherepanov is probably a 2008/09 target.

The good news is I think half of Jagr's salary is still paid by the Caps.

We have seen the Rangers do this before & many times it has backfired...OHHH That would really hurt me deep down inside,LOL :)
