Deserved! Shanny got it right. Cheap dirty hits which could end other player's careers should be punished. Hits like that don't belong in the game, doesn't matter which team/player does it.
Love the fact that Shanny referenced a similar play/contact earlier. Basically, he didn't buy Marchand and Julien's lame self-defence argument.

Another case of selective suspension on the NHL roullette wheel. How many hits have "another" team delivered in the same fashion, low where the hip is thrown below the waist, and it's only a 2 minute minor or no penalty at all, and certainly no suspension given. Ballard is notorious for it and how many times has he been suspended for it? If this was Ryan Suter hitting Tomas Kopecky in a non-nationaly televised super hyped game, there probably wouldn't have been a 5 minute major and it wouldn't be looked at for a suspension. We saw a low hit hip to thigh earlier in this same game and what happened? Nothing. Shanny and the NHL continuing to fail miserably.

The League got this bang on. Some folks cant tell the difference between a hip check, which is legal, and a clip, which is not. Check NHL rule 44 Clipping for more details. The officials have got this right when they didnt call Ballard for a play which qualifies as a legal hip check. Its mainly about he lowering of the body as he executes the check. The difference between a hip check and clipping is clearly defined in the NHL Rule book. Five games sounds about right......

Predatory play - CHECK - he clearly was looking to go after him right before the hit
Injury result - CHECK
Put that all together - 5 games is what he got - personally I think he should've gotten more. If they really want to get the garbage out of the game, suspend them for 10-20 games, don't just hurt the player - hurt the team. The more that happens, the less that players likely do these stupid things if they lose 1) their pay and 2) are unavailable for important games...
And anyone who believes he was trying to protect himself by diving down - then either Marchand is the most chicken hockey player in the NHL - or he must've had the shakes right at that moment...

The identical play between those 2 players happened seconds before this incident did. Salo was not charging at him or trying to hit him through the boards.

If there was a penalty called when Marchand punched Salo in the back of the head during the play (tsn showed a replay of it I believe) then there would have been no suspension and no injury. I remember when there was 1 ref on the ice now 2 refs can't do the job of one. Either way he went shoulder on shoulder with Salo about 30 seconds before the hit and then decided to take Salos knees out and injure him. 5 games for a guy like Marchand is fair.

Point of contact is the hip.
Nothing right before the play suggesting Hamhuis was trying to injure Lucic.
Marchand vs Salo -
Point of contact is at the knees.
Marchand and Salo go shoulder on shoulder and then Marchand gives him a punch in the back of the head. Salo and Marchand go in for the same play and Marchand submarines him at the knees.

5 games for the dirtiest player in the game? Not enough...although he'll find a way to screw up again and get nailed for 10+ games. This 5 games costs him over $150k.

Did I read that bolded part right? A dirty player he may be but Matt Cooke has the "dirtiest player in the game" all locked up. I'm no fan of this hit or Marchand but really, "dirtiest player in the game"? C'mon.

It took Bert a couple years to shed his bad rap, and given Cooke's history it will take him a few years of playing as he is currently with no more incidents before most people will say he has turned over a new leaf and is no longer dirty or dangerous. Hopefully Cooke doesn't pull another one out of his hat, but if he does, it will erase the 40 games of clean play in a hurry.
My point on Marchand is not that he didn't go low on Salo and not that it wasn't dirty. It's that the league appears to "spot pick" the incidents and what is a penalty/suspension and what isn't. Canuck fans argue it's dirty and say the suspension is justified, yet defend their players (mainly Ballard) when he goes low and delivers dirty/dangerous/illegal hits. Picture below is a prime example, not only does Ballard go low, he entends his own leg to initiate contact and does not go hip to hip or hip to stomach area. He intentionally sticks his leg out and when his hip makes initial contact it is right at McGinn's knee and he flips him. But the Canuck fans all felt and argued that Ballard did no wrong and it was perfectly legal.

He did go low and that tackle was a dirty, he got 5 games (I thought 3 would be fair?)
Anyhow, he got what he deserved. Overall Shanahan does a good job, so move on guys.

I just don't like Marchand at all, so I was glad he got 5 games (He is one of those players that I just hate for no real good reason). I am enjoying the bickering between the teams as well. I want this rivalry to get better and better and this helps do it
