I'm surprised that Lucic didn't get a suspension, not that I think he deserved one. The 2 min minor was enough IHO. And I'll stand by my assertion that goalies who come out that far from their crease should prepare to be smoked. If I come out of my crease when I play, I do so with the knowledge that I leave myself open to contact. Otherwise, what the hell is the point of having a crease? Why call them "netminders" or "goaltenders" if they're not tending goal or minding their nets?
As for the standing up for your teammate, I'll give you this little analogy. I was playing in a gentlemans league tourney. The team I was playing with was not a group of guys that I regularly played with, but being a netminder means there's always ample ice time to be had. Now keep in mind this was "Gentlemens" rules; no hitting, no fighting, no slapshots, etc. The play was getting a little chippy in around my crease: the other team throwing a couple slashes, I chopped at some ankles, etc. One guy kept parking his a$$ right in my crease, trying to get some garbage goals. I shoved him a couple times in the small of the back trying to move him, but he had a good 30lbs on me and wasn't moving. So I took it upon myself to introduce his head to my blocker.....Mr. Ear, please meet Mr Vaughn T1000. You can imagine how well that went over. He turned around, took a stickswing at my goalpads, and then gave me a shove backwards. In steps one of my defensemen who I had never met before that day. He proceed to beat that guy down like he owed him money and earn himself an ejection from the game.
Now, was he wrong in doing that? Yes.
Was I wrong at trying to defend my crease a la Battlin' Billy Smith or Ron Hextall and did I deserve a little lovetap? Probably.
But you can damn well I made sure I thanked that defenseman afterwards for sticking up for me and bought him a beer or two. It's what teammates do for each other when they're in the trenches together so-to-speak. You can damn well bet that nobody else came in my crease for the rest of the game.
