Mock Draft?

Apparently Arizona has gotten 2 offers for the 3rd overall pick that is making the GM think long and hard. Elliot Friedman thinks 1 of the teams might be Columbus.

Assuming the offer is 8th overall, Rychel(former 1st rounder and one Columbus top prospect), and a 2nd round pick, maybe 2(Columbus has 3 2nd round picks).

I'd just like to be Devils advocate here -

Leafs fans...why do you hate Phil Kessel so much?

It comes down to a few things.

Any beloved players that have played for the Leafs have been the hardest working and media friendly kind of folk. Kessel comes off standoffish and isn't the most media friendly persona. He appears lazy at times and I think that is the position he plays. He is a sniper, not a get into the corners and grind it out sort of player. He is a stand out player on the worst team ever. Yes I am a Leafs fan.

He has a tendency to be super streaky which doesn't help add any flava to the sauce.

I feel honestly if he had iota of how to carry himself in what is arguably the most difficult market to play in, he'd wouldn't be so hated.

It took Sundin at least 4 or 5 years to get love in Toronto and that came when he added some sandpaper to his game. He never fought but man he could be an irritant when he wanted to. His infectious smile was a winning smile.

Also Kessel is part of a team who vividly remember Gilmour, Clark etc etc. Those are lofty expectations to live up to. To this day if Clark is around town, he gets instant love. Same with Killer, same with Sundin..

Kessel will excel in a less pressure packed environment where he isn't the shining star. If he were with Crosby, I think he'd be happier than a pig in doo doo.

Bottom line, to play here doesn't just mean putting on a sweater. You gotta play the part. It's sad, but he doesn't belong on a team that is barely above water. Just sad. He will light it up wherever he goes as long as he is 2nd fiddle to the star.

Very good points but lets not forget... Phil Kessel for Tyler Sequin and Dougie Hamilton. Toronto would have been in a much better position today if they didn't make that trade.

Rask for Raycroft...

Two first rounders for Kessel:laugh:

The did arguably win the Phaneuf trade though.

That would be pretty enticing. However, Rychel's agent is an agent from hell, so CBJ would love to move him. Plus they have a ton of forward prospects.

If I was Arizona, I'd be asking for Dano instead. If it's the #8, Dano and two 2nds, I'd do it.

I prefer Wennberg to Dano, and Milano is more of a boom or bust prospect. But he might be the best Center prospect that CBJ has.

I agree that nobody is going to trade away a stud dman very easily. I can't imagine OEL getting traded.

Hedman came into his own this playoffs. He's turning into the generational player that scouts had predicted. Stamkos didn't score a goal in the finals.

Hanafin has incredible hockey IQ. He can move the puck out of his own zone very efficiently and always makes the safe play. He rarely makes a mistake. He's not flashy, and could be totally underrated.

So many teams are looking for a good puck moving defenseman who can also play defense. His skating is world class. He could easily be compared to Doughty in a few years.

It's funny you mention Doughty and Hanafin together. Because, seeing Provorov, he looks like a Doughty type player to me. Doubt either of them reach that level, but as a player comp for Ivan I think Doughty is on the nose.

Wennberg is would be acceptable too.

I was a bit disappointed in his performance in the playoffs, especially vs Kelowna. They are a powerhouse, but there were a couple games where he was one of the worst +/- in those games.

Seeing him against Calgary, I was very impressed. He can take over a game as a d-man. There is more of a bust potential with Provorov. But his ceiling is definitely higher than Hanifin.

maybe the better comparison for Hanafin is J-Bo. Great skating, has offensive skills but will always think defense first. Make the safe play, move the puck to the forwards.

I see Arizona keeping the 3rd pick and drafting marner.............not sure if marner and domi played together in London and had success but Arizona did trade for duclair who had chemistry in the world juniors with domi....... could be a pretty fast and effective first line with domi, duclair, and marner
if Arizona passes on marner and takes strome, then I see the leafs taking marner because of hunter
as for kessel............. brian burke may come calling. I think kessel would be a great fit in Calgary........ of course kessel would have to wave his ntc,

All good points. I think he's a great player and would seriously excel elsewhere. Toronto seems to eat players alive if they don't immediately produce and play all aspects of the game. To me - once he goes to a different team (because at this point it seems to be almost a slam dunk) he will enjoy his career more and play the game a little more relaxed and perhaps see an increase in production.

Either way, Friday should be a crazy day for hockey fans

Im hearing rumblings that the blues are pitching hard for the rights to mcdavid

oshie / backes going bye bye?

IF the Blues were making a push in that direction, I'd be willing to bet it's centered around Elliott/Allen + Shattenkirk/Pietrangelo + Oshie/Backes + Picks

But - I find it hard to believe McDavid ends up in anything but an Oilers sweater come Friday

I echo this sentiment. There is no rush to trade McDavid. It's not like the Oilers don't like the pick. They will entertain offers, but why trade McDavid when you haven't even given RFA and UFA a shot yet. Oilers don't even know where they stand. If the Oilers are able to sign Niemi, Franson, and St. Louis as short term solutions, why give up a long term piece? Heck, throw a RFA offer sheet to Saad, with the compensation as a 2nd.

That makes more sense to me than trading for Phaneuf/Kessel, Oshie/Backes, etc.

It's all about giving the Oiler fans hope, and by winning the lottery, it's done that. Why would the Oilers give that away at this time??

Playoffs aren't even expected next year. All the Oilers have to achieve is get close to the playoffs. And given the draft lottery set up next year, they could fluke out again and get a top 3 prospect.

One of RNH/Draisaitl will have to be traded eventually if McDavid becomes #1C. But Draisaitl can go to the AHL next year to round out his game, so there's no rush.

Plus the Oilers have another 1st (Pit) and 2nd (Mtl). See who drops to them there.

Goalie market is flooded right now. A decent goalie prospect would only cost a 2nd r pick, or just give up money for a UFA vet. Lack, Bernier could be had for a 2nd. Markstrom, Jones for a 3rd. Cam Talbot could probably fetch the most, but won't cost even a late 1st.

The thing the Oilers have to do right now is shed off the bad contracts. Worst case is they wait another year to have more cap to spend. Purcell, Gordon, Nikitin, and Scrivens will be UFA. They'll have to see if they can unload Pouliot.

Now the st louis beat writer is suggesting oshie to panthers, berglund to any body with a bag of used pucks and even backes.

i think these guys ingest too many adult beverages or even some peyote/shrooms and let their imagination become printed matter. thats fine if you are a creative novelist, not so good if you are a Hockey writer.

Personally , i hope the Blues do trade oshie (he is always falling down) and certainly berglund (who is just one big Pylon opposing players skate around) Getting a high first rounder is exciting but a low first and additional picks would be fine. Babashev and fabbri are ready to take their place with the big club next year. I just dont want them to waste a trade on some used goaltender like anderson or an uproven one in talbot!
