NHL Trade Rumours and Deals

I know the Hawks weren't going after Roy, but to see him land in VAN stings. If the Hawks don't make another move, I will be a bit dissapointed. The Penguins are proving to the league and fanbase that they are serious about winning the Cup this year, if the Hawks only move is getting Handzus, well, they are good but I don't think they are good enough to compete with the Pens roster.

And, with Bolland injured again, they need to add another center.

Not sure whether to be happy or sad with the Derek Roy trade - didn't give up much of anything but we seem to have a fair amount of smaller skilled forwards on this team and could use a little more sandpaper.

For some reason I kind of saw this happening when I heard Roy was on the market - hopefully this puts a little spring in his step and he can get back or close to a point a game guy...we shall see...

Hurricanes trade Adam Hall to the Lightning for MA Bergeron and a 7th round pick. Odd one, the Canes just claimed Hall off waivers from the Lightning two weeks ago. Essentially, the Canes get Bergeron and a pick for nothing.

Coyotes trade Joel Rechlicz to the Capitals for Matt Clackson.

The Canucks aren't done Joe, I think they will get their sandpaper in Ryan Clowe.

Originally, I was a bit disappointed when it Handzus went to the Hawks. Big 3rd line centre. Thought he would fill the hole a centre nicely.

But I think Gillis got good value for Roy. Connauton wasn't going to crack the team. He's a good prospect. Best of luck in Dallas. Hope Roy works out, but I expect a bit of a slow start b/c he's going to get tossed in from line to line, especially when everyone comes back from injury. Maybe he'll have more chemistry with Booth than Kesler did.

I hadn't heard that one yet - better get my head out of my real work here and start plowing through the twitter feeds.

Clowe is an interesting case - he has certainly had a lot of good years and is a good player but there is a lot of buzz for a guy with no goals yet this year - but I would certainly like the addition.

On the Sabres website:

BUFFALO, N.Y. (April 2, 2013) --- Buffalo Sabres General Manager Darcy Regier today announced that the Sabres have signed free agent forward Tim Schaller to a two-year, entry-level contract.

Schaller (6'2", 210 lbs., 11/16/90) recently finished his senior season at Providence College, recording 23 points (8+15) and 61 penalty minutes in 38 games in 2012-13. Serving as an assistant captain for the Friars, Schaller was named the 2013 Hockey East Defensive Forward of the Year and helped Providence reach the Hockey East semifinals in back-to-back seasons. Schaller finished his collegiate career having appeared in 131 games and totaling 68 points (29+39).

Prior to his career at Providence, the Merrimack, N.H. native played for the New England Huskies of the Eastern Junior Hockey League (EJHL). As captain of the Huskies in 2008-09, Schaller appeared in 47 games and tallied 40 points (16+24).

Rangers add free agent d-man:

As per the New York Rangers official twitter account and several other sources, the club has made its second free agent signing in four days and has agreed to terms with 20 year old defenseman Tommy Hughes.

Hughes, a shutdown d-man, played four seasons with the London Knights of the OHL. Neither Hughes nor Conor Allen will go into the books until next season, meaning that the Rangers are still at 49 contracts for this season and have room for one more on the books, according to Pat Leonard of the New York Daily News.

According to John Matisz of the Metro London News, Tommy Hughes was invited to the Rangers summer development camp last year but could not attend because of a broken foot- so it is safe to say that the Rangers have had their eyes on Hughes for quite some time.

Hughes, a right-handed shot, is not the kind of guy that is going to bring a lot of offense to a team but he is stalwart in his own end and is a celebrated shot-blocker. He is also capable of delivering big hits with his 6'2" , 215 lb frame.

His last year with the London Knights was his most productive, scoring 1 goal and 15 assists in 67 games played. Hughes reportedly has a heavy shot and is a bit of an unorthodox skater but there is a lot to like about his game.

Flyers supposedly made an offer for Clowe, but the Sharks want Couturier in return?

Also heard Edmonton and Flyers were in talks for Hemsky and Whitney, Couturier's name was in on this as well. Only way to make this work is if Meszaros and Briere are placed on LTIR?

Minnesota also in the Clowe trade talks.

If the Sharks want Couturier from the Flyers, I can't imagine what they'd find from the Canucks ..

Jagr to Bruins

Traded for McDermid and another prospect and a conditional draft pick. I can't link the article.

There's no way Couturier is in the deal. Clowe is a UFA at the end of the season.

SJ is probably looking for a 1st, but will probably settle for a 2nd + a prospect. That's what the market looks like it's at with UFA rentals. (Jagr, Roy, Regher)

I can see Canucks offering up Sauve and a 5th. Not sure if they have any more 2nds.

Why not? If the Flyers trade for him they intend to sign him to a new contract, it's already been said he is not a rental for the Flyers if they get him. If they want him and don't want to play the free agent game during the summer, they will need to give up something for him. It's not like Couturier is lighting it up this year, and Clowe is the prototypical Flyer forward.

Caps snag a good college d-man.

The University of Minnesota hockey program announced Tuesday that junior Nate Schmidt will forego his senior season with the Gophers and enter the NHL.

Schmidt, a defenseman, signed two-year entry-level contract with the Washington Capitals. Schmidt played in 96 career games for the Gophers, scoring 12 goals and collecting 74 points. He earned All-WCHA honors twice and was part of the last two regular season titles with the Gophers.

Schmidt had a breakout sophomore season with 41 points in a year where the Gophers made it to the Frozen Four. He emerged this year as one of the team’s top players. He led the WCHA in scoring for defensemen this season with nine goals and 32 points.

“I wouldn’t trade my experience at the University of Minnesota for anything, and I am incredibly grateful to the team and staff for three great seasons at the ‘U,’ Schmidt said in a news release. “This wasn’t an easy decision to make, but it is the right decision, and I am looking forward to beginning the next chapter of my playing career.”

Sharks sign two college forwards, Matt Nieto from BU and Chris Crane from OSU. They also sign two prospects Chris Tierney and Danill Tarasov.
