No NHL discipline for Pronger's stomp

And we all wonder why people laugh at the NHL in the States? The league is a total joke. The NFL and NBA have guidelines on suspensions. It's cut and dry. You break a specific rule, you get x amount of games or x $$ fine. Why is it that the NHL continues to be so damn inconsistent with it's discipline?

I don't think we've heard the end of this one yet. Anyone care to bet that when Simon's career is over (likely at the end of this year) we hear *some* type of inference to him being a target of the league? And if there are racial undertones to the arguement....look out.

Racism or not, there are most definitely two sets of "rules" at work here. Somehow Chris Pronger has become the golden child for everything he does. There is NO DOUBT in my mind he's one of the biggest goons in the history of the league. He's consistently trying to injure other players and he gets away with it because he's a marquee player.

I'll even go to the extent that, as we argue this point, there is someone in the media working on this story RIGHT NOW. It's just a matter of time before someone breaks it.

TSN is showing some more video Clearer video reveals Pronger's stomp

With poor quality video as evidence, Anaheim Ducks captain Chris Pronger escaped punishment from the National Hockey League after apparently stomping on Vancouver centre Ryan Kesler in a game on Wednesday night.

But a clearer version of the video revealed late Thursday - with a better look at the incident - raises the question of whether or not the star defenceman should face disciplinary action.

While the original game footage showed the incident from a distance as the puck was being cleared out of Anaheim's zone, the second version zeroes in on Kesler and Pronger as they got tangled along the back boards.

The incident happened in the opening minute of the second period in Anaheim's zone after a dump in from the blue line by Canucks defenceman Sami Salo.

The enhanced video is pretty clear, he stomped him good. Kesler tried to scissors his legs, Pronger stomped the hell out of him. Dumb move by Kesler, dumber move by Pronger. Not sure how the league cuold not act on it, then again, Bettman sure does seem to love the Ducks.

In any other sport, the brass would have called major BS if they tried to do what the Ducks did with Selanne and Niedermayer. If anyone believes either guy was going to retire, well............ Brilliant move if you can get away with it by the Ducks, but they aren't fooling anyone. I'm sure we will see rules in place soon regarding the cap and so called "retired" players who make miracle change of heart decisions to come back halfway through the season.

Simon got 30 games for his stomp.
Havlat got a fistful of games for kicking someone.

The guy gets 7 suspensions in this league (and arguably, the number should be closer to 10-12), and gets NOTHING for stomping on someone???

There's no justification that Coly could give to justify a non-suspension, other than star players get star treatment.

He SHOULD get 30 games - the rest of the regular season, the playoffs, and if any, into next year... they did that to Simon, why should this goon be any different?

Ducks Homers sound off

This is a neat little thread to read about the people on the other side. Keep reading from start to finish. I like how it goes from being a Canadian Media and Canucks bashing thread to them backpedalling and shutting up altogether

My guess is suspension, 10 games max. Anything more will run into the playoffs....THEN you've got a whole new arguement.

10 games gets the NHL off the hook.

I say rest of regular season aswell,

the NHL will break out the old "playoff games count for more, so you can get away with more and miss less time when you do stuff near them"

I agree, playoff games are more important, but, you break the rules, you should get suspended.

ah well

....you know what! pronger has gotten away with more then any other player in the league and its high time for this player to get his due! nothing would make me happier then to see him out for the year and the play-offs!!!

Man, seven suspensions and a blatantly obvious stomp gets no suspension? What the heck is Campbell thinking? The NHL had better review it and get it right. 10 games is the minimum. I don't really go for the "playoff games count for more" argument. You break the rules, you suffer the consequences.

Yeah - I wouldn't think the suspension will reach the playoffs - it isn't like the league is going to go from no games to a huge suspension.

This is the first time that I have seen the second video and it actually looks like he is trying to get him with the skate twice - not good enough on the first go round so get the stomp in there - what a classy guy

I'm not defending the NHL as I feel they have been totally lacking in disciplining head shots going way back(say to the Paul Kariya hatchet job by the Shark D-man...name escapes me).
But the NBA is no shining example. The no call on the body check on Steve Nash in last year's playoffs comes to mind. In fact I think they were more ridiculous because the only call on the play was to the Suns for leaving the bench.
All leagues have their inconsistencies. Pronger will get 6 or 7 games is my prediction.

I think that the suspension should have been atleast half of what Simon got for the same -- 15 games!! 8 games for a repeat offender isn't enough!!
