NYR coach Renney fired

For the better part of the 90´s the rangers picked up nobody via draft. Jamie Lundmark...Dwight Helminen....Hugh Jessiman....

Recently they have been much better at getting young talent, Between Staal, Callahan, Lundqvist, Dubinsky, Sanguinetti, DelZotto, and Anisimov we are bound to have some studs. Not to mention that Staal and Lundy already are, and Callahan and Dubinsky are a year or two away from a Jeff Carter type year barring some unforeseen problems.

I dont know how everyone could just forget about Cherepanov too. A top 5 pick dropped down because of signing issues, who was arguably the most NHL ready talent in the draft behind the 1st pick.

The rags drafting and young player breeding has gotten better since the crsh and burn 90´s era. Dont let their poor money management sheild your view of their current youth talent.

That being said, I think Tortorella is an excellent pickup, right now it looks like the best move sather will make this year. so far.....

Yes, there is some excellent youth in the system. My point is it would never develop to its potential under Renney. Cheraponov was a highly touted prospect. Those players are hit and mostly miss, but tragically we'll never know how it would have turned out.

I wouldn't call Cally and Duby Jeff Carter types just yet, though.

And Blair Betts' qualifications as someone who might score a goal in OT are.... be as condescending as you want, you know just as well as I do that it makes no sense putting a guy with 27 goals in over 300 career NHL games out for regular shifts in OT.

It does if your only worry is actually trying to get out of OT without being scored on, as opposed to actually putting the puck in the net. The Rangers don't have the talent to score, so the hope is that they can get to the shootout and let the win be decided by the goaltenders: in other words, hope that Lundy stops everything fired at him, and the other goalie screws up just enough so Zherdev or Dubi or whoever else can net the shootout winner.

agreed. why bother relying on the lack of offense in OT when it's the defense that's been winning the games. then you got lundqvist who's been winning the majority of shootouts and people who can actually score in the shoot out now in dawes, sjostrum, zherdev, naslund, and drury.

Just yet, but no one can deny that those 2 have the talent and fire to be top line scorers-table setters.

Just saying, I cant complain about recent youth pickups for the Rags. We dont have Kessel or Ryan, but then again we have not been bad enough over the last couple years to get a talent like that in the draft. Except chere, again.

Callahan and Dubinsky are a year or two away from a Jeff Carter type year barring some unforeseen problems.

So you think both Callahan and Dubinsky are ready to be 35-40 goal scorers as well as defensive players and PK/SH goal scorers within 2 years? That's an awfully bold prediction, and I will gladly put money on that.

Having watched them every day for the last 2 years, Id say they are definetly on the verge of leading this team. They already play PP and PK, Callahan is basically Chris Drury in a younger, more energized body. He also has a nose for the net a little more than Drury does.

Maybe a rangers fan cn correct me, but dont those 2 lead the team in hits right now too?

I am pretty excited to watch the next game too, just to see if I can notice a difference in their play....All they need is to win one game and Ill be sold on Tortorella;)

I'm not sure about Duby but Cally definitely leads the team in hits and if I had to guess dubinsky would be right behind him

long time Rangers fan here. hate to disagree but coaching was not the problem. The team needs a take charge guy on the ice. Tort may help but he won't produce miracles.

A few comments to add.

1) Drury was a good leader on the Sabres. I can't explain why he has lost it with the Rangers, maybe his guaranteed huge contract has went to his head. Maybe he has lost faith in his team. I personally think the latter, and a new coach should help this.

2) Redden is a bum.

3) Gomez is an A talent, but he is an A playmaker and needs an A+ scorer with him to be effective. He had that in NJ with Elias. He could have had it last season with the Rangers if he had any chemstry at all with Jagr. Nobody on the team currently fits the role of Gomez' go to guy. Instead of moving Gomez, maybe they should try to bring in a scorer to put on his wing.

4) Zherdev will crumble under Tortorella. He won't like Tortorella calling him out after a bad game, and will lose all confidence. Its a shame, just when the kid was actually becoming what we all know he can be.

5) Whether the Rangers needed a new coach or not (I think they do), Tortorella is not hte right answer. He is a bad coach in my opinion. They should have looked to Ted Nolan, he would have been probably the best guy for the Rangers in their current situation.

You mean Dustin Brown, Brent Seabrook, Zach Parise, Ryan Getzlaf, Brent Burns, Ryan Kesler, Mike Richards or Corey Perry?

The funny thing is, the Rangers couldn't have picked a worse pick that round... they really couldn't. Jessiman is the only player from the first round in the 03 draft to have never played a game.

Jessiman did have huge potential at the time, it is hard to predict which players will develop further and which have hit their peak. Jessiman's injury issues didn't help his lack of development either. He would have been a lot better if he wasn't fighting injuries. Not that he was the best guy to pick, as there were a lot of great players available, but Jessiman was not looked upon as a horrible pick on the day of the draft.

1) I dont think it was his contract necessarily, he is not the type of player to be affected like that. I know he is not a vocal leader, which is a problem when no one on the team is...

2)Redden is a bum

3)Thats what Ive been saying, you have Naslund, but how good can a 45 year old has-been be? Not to mention you have he and Drury, 2 set up men by nature. They need that go-to guy on wing to do anything. Thats why I said that I wouldnt be surprised if they make a play for a guy like Gaborik before they try for someone like Bouwmeester.

4)Zherdev needs to get smacked around. Hes a grown man, if he cant handle a coach telling him hes wrong or played poorly, then hes a healthy scratch that day. period. Reminds me of a certain someone we already had, Lexay Ovalevkay.

5) I think the rags need coach to smack them around in general, not just zherdev. Whether torts is the answer remains to be seen, Id rather give him a chance now than sign him for next year then fire him midway through. I think he has something to offer the team for now at least.
