Is it just me, or are there much fewer breaks for this year's OPC Premier?

Is it the price? The hit or miss nature? Lack of quality rookies? Manufactured patches? The economy? Or am I just crazy?

By the way, I haven't broken any but I do have another couple packs/boxes of 07/08 headed my way. I liked it last year and the design is almost unchanged, maybe I'll break some once the price goes down.

Any way, I wish more people would break some so I can break vicariously and maybe snag some singles. ;)

Curious to hear what everyone thinks.

If you look at the product itself it is small in terms of player variety. When you look at the base 17/42 which is 40% don't play in the NHL, which means some teams don't even have a current player represented.

People must be saving up for the Cup as well.

You've got a price point nearly 20% higher than last year, a much weaker checklist, weak short term RC crop, and a bad economy. Perfect storm for a dud of a product.

There was a lot less made this year. I'm actually surprised 2 out of the 10 Bossy/Potvin Induction Ink Golds are already on eBay. It usually takes a while to see one /10 but already 2 are there. So, I would say that it is a combination of smaller print run, and less busting.

Don't forget the big 800 pound gorilla in the room that is The Cup, in the on deck circle. I'm sure there are some high end rippers holding onto their money for that product.

It is as another member mentioned, partly price, partly weak rc crop, and part bad economy.

I for one am choked by every product this year (minus UD Black) as they have not made one decent Oiler card or rookie. Crossing my fingers for The Cup.

Good to know I'm not nuts.

I didn't know they cut down on production of Premier this year. If the rookie crop is to blame, we should see Cup being broken substantially less as well.

I do think a few collectors are saving up for the Cup, but I didn't think it was that much to blame. We'll see in a month.

I think that the product overall is just plain weak and nobody wants to spend money on it.

Couldn't have said it better myself.

Jersey Jersey Jersey Jersey Is so laughable. It makes those cards look FUGLY. Also them stating "Game Used" is beyond ridiculous. One product that will be chillin on shelves in hobby stores world wide for a long time.

They should put Manufactured Manufactured Manufactured Manufactured on those ugly patch cards, then put "Game Used" on the bottom of them. Oh well there is always next year.........

Darren mentioned the price point. What isn't clear is WHY the price is 20% higher. Moreover, why is there an even bigger than usual gap between the US and Canadian price.

I seriously wonder if there's a middleman who decided to take a bigger piece of the pie, and to hell with everyone else.

You would think so. but the new inserts such as the 500 goal club and other hits like Martin Brodeur's new sig with 552 wins on it will be enough to make people overlook the rookie crop and try to go for the home run!

I will not be surprised if the first few Cup cards that are /15 or less to hit ebay go for out of this world prices. A) because people have been holding their money back all year and B) because people are afraid the product will not be heavily broken and thus it will take time for another to show.

Price point. Last year's price was bad enough. This year's is obscene.
Rookie crop.
Economic situation.
No Ovechkin autos.
Lack of originality... for the most part it's last year's stuff turned on its side.

Add it all up... and here we are.

I'm thinking that they figured that with a reduced volume of wax, they need to up their margins in order to make the $$$ they need to keep going.

And with people breaking less and less this year... the $ amount doesn't change, but the %age has to jump...

I don;t get it either my pre order price at wholesale is more than what it was retailing for online in the US. On top of the cost I think the product is terrible but I didn't like it last year either. Just two many jersey's and blank patches and not enough real game used colorful patches.

Other than the dual autos (which are REALLY sharp), I haven't seen one card from this product that I would be interested in. The manufactured patch card of Gerry Cheevers pretty much sums this set up...."Cheesy". It wasn't even all that good last year.

I know from personal experience, I cracked over a case of it last year. This year one box. Gotta an Orr/Bourque dual so I thought I should quit while I was ahead. Also, Jason, jernst2 here, was the OPC Premier king last year. Bought one box from me, it was meh, and I think he is turned off of the product (Correct me if I'm wrong Jason). There was a price cut last year, and I think there will be another one this year.

When the Canadian dollar dropped in value vs. the US, retailers were quick to mark up merchandise coming from the states. When the dollar came back closer to par these same retailers tended to not hurry to adjust pricing.

Same goes for oil/gas.

Seen some nice cards from premier but these days I find it harder and harder to drop big money on wax.
