Pro Set Stanley Cup Hologram

Does anybody know what series the Stanley Cup hologram was inserted into the packs???

How many do you think are still left in packs if any of the 5,000 made?

I believe it was the first series. Apparently there are still cases of unopened Pro Set. There must be some still in packs. Back in the day there was a lot of that product opened, but since it was vastly overproduced some of the holograms must still remain in packs. How many? I don't know if anyone knows. There are a few on eBay now, but still hard to find. Harder to find them in good condition too.
 
90-91 Pro Set Series 1 is where the hologram was found..... though I wouldn't be shocked to learn some of them went into Series 2.

The Patrick Roy Auto was in Series 1 of 91-92, and a Kirk McLean in Series 2 that year - allegedly. I say "allegedly" because nobody can actually locate a copy of that card.

I think there might be multiple versions of the Roy too?

The Roy was in the Cdn boxes of 91-92 Series 1, there was one inserted in the French boxes of 91-92 Series 2. The NHL 75th Anniversary hologram was in all boxes of 91-92 Series 1

90-91 Series 1 - at least I recall the first run had boxes where people were using metal detectors to find the hologram since the packs had packaging that was see-through. Later on, Pro Set I believe added some foil either in the wrappers or somewhere in the case to literally foil those who were hunting the holograms. In the wrappers - they had added to the wrappers to keep people from individually searching the packs. At the time of release, that hologram was getting huge prices relative to the $20-30 Cdn cost of a box
 
Was the Roy autograph the first player autograph in a hockey set. Or at least, the first Roy autograph in a set?

It was an addition driven by the Canadian distributor - partly to counter UD's insertion of Brett Hull autos into the Upper Deck set that year.

That was the first Roy - but outside of the ink and the hand numbering on the back - that was about it. It was just a signed base card

Interesting. Thanks for that info. So, does that mean the Brett Hull was the first hockey autograph insert by a card company? Or, since it was the same series year (1991-92), both UD and ProSet hold the honour of having the first 2 autograph cards? CORRECTION: I just checked Beckett.com and it shows 1991-92 Score also had Bobby Orr autographed cards.

If I wanted to be nit-picky, which series came to market first that year - UD, ProSet, or Score?

NOTE: Beckett.com also lists 1991 Classic and 1991 Classic Four Sport having a bunch of autograph cards. But 'Classic' is not a major card company, so I, personally, won't count them. Plus, they didn't have the rights to the NHL, NBA, NFL or MLB....the players were shown in their non-pro uniforms mostly. STILL....pretty impressive autograph list!
 
There is a LOT of un-opened 90-91 Pro Set out in the market. People stock piled cards during the boom thinking they would hit it big in the future by re-selling.

The odds of hitting the Hologram are very tough, you could open 100's of boxes before you hit one. But it's still worth a shot considering you can get sealed boxes now for $5-$10.

The first licensed year that autographs popped up in packs was 91-92. These chase cards were very hard to hit in packs. 91-92 Pro Set has several variations for the Roy Autograph. There is an english version, french version and a special version from the collectors kit. There potentially is a signed version of the MASK card in French boxes although I cannot verify this 100%. Years ago on another board, someone claimed that they had pulled one of the MASK autographs from a pack they got for Christmas when they were a kid.

The 91-92 McLean Pro Set autograph card has never surfaced. I doubt it made it into packs. No one has ever seen even a picture of the card..
 
I also might add that the Stanley Cup Hologram card from 90-91 is very hard to find in high grade condition. Gomaz the site owner has a PSA 8 copy of the card.

My copy is a little rough, however I got it for a very good price and it's the only other copy I have ever seen at shows next to Gomaz copy.

Just a few years ago, the card was selling between $150-$200. Now it seems to go for well over that price. Recently one sold as buy it now for around $150, however I am sure the seller did not realize that they could have fetched much more. I am sure someone snatched that card up quickly.

The previous two auctions sold for $449-ish plus, which is more ballpark for that card now. There are a few on eBay right now and I believe all have BIN's of $400 plus easy. I'm lucky to own one also. I happen to have a very rare error version of the card. Much harder to find than the regular version.

I have a PSA8 that was packed pulled a few years back around Christmas.

I found it in a box in Southern California when we were out visiting my wife's family for Christmas. When I received the card back from PSA, at the time it was the only PSA8 available. I see that two others have been graded since then.

I do not 100% know the distribution model that Pro Set used when it came to the harder to find cards (Gillis Bloody Nose, No Bio Burr, Corson AS COR, Stanley Cup Hologram ect), but most of the success I have had pulling those cards have come from boxes that I found from Texas, New Mexico and California. The two cases where I pulled 30 Gillis cards from came from New Mexico. The Shawn Burr card I pulled last Christmas was from a box in El Paso. Not to say that some of these hits didn't make it up north, but all my success has come from boxes in the SW US.

I am currently sitting on two cases that seem to be run of the mill as far as E/V go, so I am not holding out hope that my second Stanley Cup card is in these packs.

There was an ad inserted in a hockey mag (The Hockey News, if I'm not mistaken) for 91-92 Score that has mention of Bobby Orr AND Eric Lindros autographs. Too bad that never worked out. What a hug missed opportunity by Score after having signed Lindros as an exclusive back in 1990.

Correct. And Score also had the Bobby Orr auto.

The first autographed cards in major league licensed product was by Upper Deck, the Reggie Jackson Heroes of Baseball. So naturally UD brought that to the other licenses they had and the other companies had to respond.

On the back the card it is numbered to /10,000, whereas the regular version has it numbered to /5,000. I've only ever seen a scan of one other copy other than mine, and I have heard of a couple people having it. Most people have never heard of it and didn't know it exists. I believe it is very rare. eBay has a few copies of the regular version if anyone wants to compare. Try finding another copy. :snapout:

There are a few errors, which include mine and the one you mentioned. There is also one which is missing entirely the words "The Stanley Cup" on the front.
