Do you think a team should incur a minor penalty for icing the puck twice within a 20 second span?

Fans,

I've been thinking about this for awhile, and I personally love the idea, so I figured I'd throw it to the community. Let me preface. I am a HUGE fan of increasing the speed of the game. I believe a fast and talented NHL is a better NHL for everybody. Penalties such as "puck over glass" (delay of game) are among my favorites. I also love the "no change" rule for the offending team when they ice the puck. To me, when I watch, I want speed, speed, speed. I am in full support of penalizing play-stopping behaviors that disrupt heavy offensive pressure, with the obvious exception for a goaltender freezing the puck.

While the icing rule in my book is a plus, I think it can be enhanced. Have you ever seen games where a team is dog-tired, ices the puck after a 2 minute shift, and then can't change? That team then wins the faceoff and immediately ices the puck again! :foottap:

Proposed Rule Change: Any team icing the puck twice within a 20 second timespan shall incur a two minute minor penalty for delay of game.

I realize there are many people who in fact hate the puck over glass rule, and I'd imagine this would rub them the wrong way. But there have to be some others out there who are much like me and want more speed and more scoring in the NHL.

What say the community? Can I reach 20% support? 30%? Dare I say...50%?

No.

They are already penalized by a face-off in their own end and the fact they can't change.

And, since you brought it up, the puck over the glass rule is the most insane thing the NHL came up with, other than the shootout. I could handle it more if the referee had some discretion about intent, but they don't.

And, while we're at it, we should also penalize the opposition team for Unsportsmanlike Conduct for flailing thier arms in the air like a bunch of spastic dancers whenever the puck goes over the glass.

Appreciate the post Orca! As I mentioned, I know some people just downright hate that puck over glass rule. And I know hockey purists are always reluctant to make rule changes. Good to see the passion in your post :)

I voted No, for the same reasons Randy pointed out. They are already penalized substantially... and I don't know which games you watch, but I've very seldom noticed a team do back to back icings.

You want to change an icing rule? Here's two - one, go to the modified touch rule or get rid of touch icing altogether, and second, shorthanded teams should be subject to normal icing rules, not given a free pass.

As for the over the glass rule, I like it as is - the number of pucks over the boards and game delays has decreased significantly since they put it in place, and with it being black and white, no discretion, I don't have yet another reason to get frustrated with poor officiating and putting whistles in pockets at so called important times of the game.

I really don't see any reason for this to be a penalty - at 18 seconds its a minor but at 22 seconds its fine, seems a little wonky to me.

I also like the puck over the glass penalty - everyone knows the rule in the defensive end so be in control of where you are firing the puck. It wouldn't hurt my feelings to see them change it a bit with pucks batted out of mid-air but I can live with that as well.

I would rather have them start getting hard on all this BS-posturing after the whistle in front of the net - it's not too bad now but as the games get more important and as the playoffs start there is going to be a lot of glovewashing and chestpumping going on - get rid of that crap IMO.

there are enough penalties...I have little problem with the over the glass rule. I feel most of the time the ref will get it right.......Sometime they don't as with any other penalty...I've seen players penalized for a high stick when it was an accidential high stick by the guys teammate
I mean you could penalized a goaltender for needing equipment adjustments when his team just iced the puck(I am pretty sure I've seen it happen)...Most of the time it is probably not an coincidence.
I do think the intentional offside rule is a little stupid.

I could see a penalty or forced use of a time out if the team is taking it's time getting to the face-off circle after an icing but even that's a stretch.
