I'm fairly new into (or back into since the early 2000s) and have heard that the base rookies, such as the /99 in NT and Cup hold the premium over the parallal version that is shorter printed (with the crazy low print withstanding).

Basically asking, if there is a NT/Cup 99 and a parallel say anything over 10, the 99 will outsell it?

What, or is there, a general rule?

Thanks for the info.

The general rule is that a parallel is not a rookie, it's a parallel. Hence a true rookie will be more desirable than the same parallel. Now, there are a few exceptions to the rule but this is mostly the case.

Hockey is different this way. In the other sports from what I understand, parallels can sell for a lot more as the numbering goes down

I like what Panini has done with their tiering for National Treasures. With The Cup, you'll have a Rainbow RC numbered to the player's jersey number and the patch is either white or the same as what would be used in the RC /99 or /249. With NT, there is a rainbow version numbered to the player's jersey number but also the Tag and Logo parallels which I think will be a difference maker moving forward.

Don't forget the snaps /3 as well. Those are going for huge money from what I've seen.

Forgot about those...point made even stronger with those. Then there's the 1/1 Shield Rookie Parallels vs the 1/1 Cup Black Rookie Parallel. I'll let you guess which I think is better :)

There's a tag parallel in The Cup #ed/5 and I'm not sure but aren't the 1/1 shields in The Cup parallel's of the base RPA? Cup also has gold non-auto parallels #ed/25 and of course black 1/1's.

Yeah, The Cup was there first ;)

For what it's worth, I got a copy of this card (2/5) for a couple hundred less than the cheapest /99. Set collectors and hoarders doing their thing.

The idea that the RC /99 is a more desirable card than the parallel version #ed to the player's jersey number.... I think it's a bit of a misconception. There are plenty of players where this is the case, but there's also plenty of players where it's not the case.

People will point to Crosby Cup Golds /87 selling for less than the RCs /99 - but we're talking about a parallel vs a true rookie card, and the print run is all of 12 cards different. If Crosby wore #8, does anyone really believe that the RC /99 would outsell the Gold /8 ???

So yeah.... Ovechkin's parallel is more valuable than his regular RC, but the Crosby that isn't the case.

I would suggest this: If you're getting the parallel version of an ARP, and it's numbered to 25 or less..... I'd expect to pay a premium. If it's numbered to anything over 75, I'd expect to pay more for the real RC.... and anything in between I'd expect the patch quality to mean more than anything else regarding premiums.... but the sales will be similar.

For the record, this is simply my impression based on a few of these cards I've gone after over the years. Only real limited one I've ever owned (from The Cup) is Gagner, which is /99. I could have had the version /91 with a 2 colour patch for less than I paid for the real RC /99 with an all white Patch.

This is about right. I've bought and sold Cup Rainbow RCs #ed between 30-60 roughly for the equivalent of their /99 or /249 counterparts.

I'm surprised by this. I know that the Seguin /19 sells for less than a comparable Seguin /99. Also, the Scheifele /55 sells for less than half of a comparable Scheifele /99. I wonder about the Price /31 and the Toews /16. The /249's are a different story since the hoarders usually don't chase those and there are enough for the set collectors to go around.

And as I mentioned, I got the RNH /5 for $200 less than the cheapest (barely 2 color) /99. No question that I enjoy this card more than I would a 1-2 color patch /99, but I still need the latter for my set :/

I think the big reason behind the drop for the golds is the set collector vs player collector issue, look at 05-06 of the 3 #/99 rookies the golds were #/87, 8 and 3. Only hardcore player collectors are chasing the golds compared to the regular set. I seem to recall at least one gold (07-08?)that was a 1/1 too thus stopping set collectors dead in their tracks.

Just bolded one part of the statement in case you have not met me :D

Haha. I meant those who hoard for reselling purposes ;)

As a set collector, I certainly agree with what you wrote. In fact, I was surprised with Burner's comment that the parallels he dealt with sold for nearly as much as the base. The only Gold I know sells for more than the /99 is the Hall /4. I suspect the Doughty /8 would too, but I think one guy has all of them...My "theory" regarding pricing is that only parallels /10 or fewer sell for more than the corresponding /99, and even then there are exceptions (e.g. RNH tag).

Yeah I don't know what the other poster's are going about. There are so many rookie parallels in Cup now.

Auto /99 or /249
Auto /Jersey Number
/25 Non Auto
/5 Tag Auto
/1 Shield

Like I love crapping on UD while Nt is hot as well guys since I also have NT to move, but please, UD also likes parallels.

I pulled a 19/19 Justin Schultz 3clr NT RAP (Oilers) the other day - (incoming and Available ;)). I can guarantee it is worth more than his ARP /99 3clr especially being his jersey number!
