Signings like these based on potential (with little to no actual performance) is exactly what has got the NHL into this mess and is what will continue to cause issues between the League and PA. There has to be some basis in reality for a signing and right now there is none, it's a bunch of folks tossing the dice around hoping that they'll get lucky down the road with no regard to the short term ramifications. It simply does not and will not ever work in the NHL business model.

Actually, the current CBA is what pushes GMs to sign these deals. Basically, GMs are buying up UFA years. They need to push the age of UFA back by 2-3 years to fix this problem and you'll see these deals disappear
