Show me Your best Pavel "The Russian Rocket" Bure cards!

This scripted sticks card with "5000" is one of the best looking cards I have ever seen! Congratulations!

Very nice cards also from the other gang members!!

Since this thread popped back up, I can do an update of my Bure 2014 Panini Prime "Prime Colors" patches. I had a chest logo patch, but gave that up to Kevin (FrozenInferno), who did a lot of research on the Bure Rangers jersey used for this card. See his info later below.

After Kevin's jersey info, I was intrigued about it. I wanted to get another "Prime Colors" Bure patch from that jersey. When the patch of the 9/11 Ribbon popped up, I snagged it. Later another one...and later another one. Even though the patch card is serial numbered out of /14, there really are only 4 patch cards for the 9/11 Ribbon. The other 10 are parts of a different patch.

If anyone has the 4th and final 9/11 Ribbon card, and are willing to part with it without holding it hostage, I'd appreciate a chance at it. Thanks! :D

Anyway....here are the 9/11 Ribbon patch cards I have ...and Kevin's story:

Info on the Bure jersey used for these patches from Kevin (FrozenInferno):

What makes this patch so special is the jersey it is cut from: A New York Rangers navy "Liberty" alternate jersey.

Naturally, I had to do some digging.

Bure was traded to the Rangers on March 18th, 2002. He only played a grand total of 51 games with the Rangers in his short stint with the team in the 2001-02 (12 games) and 2002-03 (39 games) seasons.

I was able to find out via a post from Meigray's Barry Meisel on a jersey collecting forum that the Rangers only wore one set of Rangers navy Liberty jerseys during the 2001-02 season. At this time Meigray was working with the Rangers and authenticating jerseys but the program wasn't yet in full swing so there were no population reports issued for this season.

The following season, Bure's last in the NHL (2002-03), Meigray began the full-on jersey authenticating program with unique numbers on every tag and population reports to trace the numbers back to a database. During this season Bure only wore two navy Liberty jerseys, tag numbers A02751 (Set 1) and A07331 (Set 2).

That means Bure only wore a grand total of THREE navy Liberty jerseys during his time with the Rangers.

So this is a pretty sweet patch from a rare jersey, I guess I could stop there, right?

Naw

I already knew a Bure Rangers Liberty hadn't sold in the usual hockey auctions, GameWornAuctions.net or ClassicAuctions.net, but I dug a little further and managed to find this auction from June of 2013:

http://catalog.greyflannelauctions....ny-rangers-game-used-alternate--lot29664.aspx

Due to the rarity of these Bure alternates, and knowing that Panini was buying up jerseys like crazy in 2013, I am very confident this was the jersey they used in Prime.

This 2001-02 jersey came tagged and LOA'd by the Rangers, tagged and LOA'd by Meigray (again, the year before the full registry system went into place which is why there is no unique serial number), and LOA'd from one of the most respected authenticators in the hobby, Casey Samuelson. For a pre-Meigray registry jersey it doesn't get much more solid than that.

UPDATE #1:

The Prime Authentics tag has surfaced, and confirms that the 2001-02 jersey from the auction is indeed the jersey Panini used:

UPDATE #2:

I have confirmation from Meigray's Barry Meisel that because of Bure's late trade to the Rangers (March 18th), with 12 games remaining in the season, he only made ONE appearance wearing this alternate jersey. This jersey was worn March 25th, 2002, in a 4-2 loss to the New York Islanders. Bure was scoreless, posted a -2, two PIMs, and played 24:39 of ice time in this jersey. Bure scored 12 goals in his 12 games with the Rangers to wrap up the 2001-02 season but unfortunately none of them were scored during this game.

Set dates for the alternate jerseys that season:

Oct. 19th 2001
Oct. 20th 2001
Nov. 2nd 2001
Nov. 3rd 2001
Dec. 2nd 2001
Dec. 15th 2001
Dec. 23rd 2001
Jan. 26th 2002
Jan. 30th 2002
Feb. 10th 2002
Mar. 13th 2002
Mar. 16th 2002
Mar. 25th 2002 <-- The only date Bure was a member of the Rangers

----------

As Bure only wore this one alternate during the 2001-02 season, in only ONE game, there were very few photos out there of him wearing it. I was only able to find these two via Getty:

March25-2002.jpg

As he only played the one game wearing the alternate jersey that season these are the only two images of it available on Getty, the second one being the image used on the card.

To wrap up, here are some fun facts:

- This is one of only THREE alternates Bure wore with the Rangers, and the only one worn during the 2001-02 season.

- The jersey was worn March 25th, 2002 against the New York Islanders. This was the final appearance of the jersey that season and the only game Bure was able to wear it because of his late trade.

- Bure posted a -2, two penalty minutes, and 24:39 of ice time wearing this jersey. He was held pointless this particular game, despite scoring twelve goals in the twelve games he played with the Rangers this season.

- This jersey had the rare 9/11 patch on it. It did indeed make it into the Prime Colors patch print run and was cut in (I believe) three pieces.

- Due to there being only two more Bure Rangers alternate jerseys out there it is very unlikely another Liberty jersey will ever be used in Bure cards again, making these patches few and far between.

Thanks for looking. I will keep an eye out for the final piece to the puzzle.

Some day................. :waiting:
