Or, more correctly, why is it the official chant of the Habs? I don't know the history. Also, I'm sure this is the desired effect, but it's the most annoying chant in the NHL. It must drive opposing players insane.

Don't think so... it was a more generalized soccer chant - you heard that crap EVERYWHERE...
Might have something to do with Mr. Gillett owning a large chunk of Manchester United.
Then again, it could be just Montreal fans... they are stuffing ballot boxes llike it's Florida in 2000. ;)

There's a large Italian population in Montreal. If you watch Italian football (or Euro football in general), you'll note the level fan participation. I think they're just diversifying Les Canadiens but let's hope they keep it to just singing.

Gillett owns Liverpool and only bought it recently. (A year or two) It is from soccer though, it works and it's simple, why not copy it?

Plus it's fun and adds to the atmosphere of the game. I know I had a blast serenading the Leafs with it last April.

Yea the chant is pretty annoying....On another note when the Rangers won the other day they played "Sweet Caroline".....IDK if this is going to be the new trend when my blue shirts win but I was not happy about it....That is the song the Red Sox, the franchise I hate the most, play when they win a game...That song should stay far away from New York....

Dude, they've been singing Sweet Caroline for a long time in NY. It's not something new. I remember hearing it before the lockout and every year since.

As for Ole, not sure how it found its way into the Bell Center, but it was originally a soccer chant. Ole means bravo in Spanish or Italian I believe.

I personally like the chant... in MODERATION. I think the fans are going a bit over board with it.

To be honest, they need to bring back "Les Canadiens sont la." That's our song and it trumps Ole any day of the week. It's also been around forever!

The Red Sox stole Sweet Caroline from the Rangers... just like how a bunch of teams are doing the center ice salute to the fans now too.

North American Sports has nothing on Aussie Rugby. Call me back here when you can get 90,000 North American sports fans at a game singing Waltzing Matilda in unison to throw off the competition ;)

Actually "Sweet Caroline" didn't play as a "tradition" song at the Garden until the 05-06 season thanks to Renney...It was his idea and he labeled it the Rangers "theme song" for the year....I never recall hearing it on the regular before the lock out....The Rangers used to play a song called "The Rangers Victory Song" which has been around since the 1940's.....The Red Sox started playing "Sweet Caroline" in 98' and it became a "tradition" if you will in 02'.....In my mind it's Satan's song and should stay far away from any NY teams tradition....

The only reason anyone would need to find out where it came from would be so they know where to send it back to :) Horribly annoying.

Actually, it's quite gratifying hearing the Habs fans start this up big time last year only to have Umberger score one of his 750 goals that series right after the second "O" and silence the crowd. But I was just wondering where it came from, and really, no way this doesn't piss the players the hell off.

The OLE chant started in Georgia, as fans of Wrestling's Ole Anderson would chant it at him to fire him up. This was before he turned heel.
