Verified Trader,
Hello all,
Due to the incredible amount of time and work this past school semester demanded of me, I was unable to post my monthly show-end-tell. Thankfully I now have only one final exam left between me and an engineering degree. Now onto the cards!
The following cards are pickups from early March to late April. As many are aware, I'm chasing very limited sets that are now 14 years old, so it is a daunting challenge to say the least. The aide I've received from the different forums and facebook group members in finding these cards has been superb, so thank you to everyone who has provided information leading to a purchase. As has been the case for multiple posts of mine, I could not select a concrete top ten so I will finish the post with my top 12 pickups of the past two months.
2005-06 SPGU Gold RC Michael Wall 20/25
While not the flashiest cards, the design was pretty bland to be honest, I don't mine picking these up when the price is right.
2005-06 MVP Gold RC Andrej Meszaros 89/100
Not much progress on this set, again I like picking them up when the price is right. A full set of the gold and platinum parallels would look really sharp.
2005-06 UD Victory Golds /100
The chase for this set was born out of collecting the very rare black parallels. The combination of a sharp design, good rookie crop and fairly easy on the wallet, what more could a set collector ask for!?
2005-06 Ultimate Jersey Tomas Vokoun 13/250 (2-colour)
A nice 2-colour jersey piece from a long forgotten goaltender. What makes this extra special is the jersey swatch is from the 2004 All Star Game which, in my opinion, had the sharpest all star jerseys or the modern era. The same jersey was used in his 2005-06 UD Game Patch /15 which is arguably the nicest patch in my UD Game Patch collection. Both are pictured below.
2005-06 Fleer Utra Rookie Uniformity Patch /35 (3-colour)
I loved this set growing up. I haven't been able to land the Crosby but I'm sure I will one of these days. I guess a nice 3-colour patch of Anthony Stewart will have to do for now haha.
2005-06 Fleer Hot Prospects Jakub Klepis RC 300/349 (4-colour)
While not the Ovie, 4-colour Washington patches from the old "copper eagle era" are always a welcome sight.
2005-06 Fleer Ultra Scoring Kings Patch Sundin /50 (2-colour)
I was scrolling through ebay and I saw this card posted at a low BIN price. I couldn't resist this nice 2-colour Leafs piece which looks to be from the "LE" in either MAPLE or LEAFS from the crest.
2005-06 Artifacts Frozen Fabrics Horton Patch 39/50 (4-colour)
I'm sure one member in particular on this forum who would appreciate this card. What makes this card stick out is the 4-colour piece fitted in a tiny patch window. What part of the jersey is comes from is a little tough to pinpoint, but eye catching nonetheless.
2005 Canadian Fall Expo Priority Signings Luongo 13/20
A nice clean auto from one of the funniest characters in the game. Hopefully he has a few more years left in him, and with Florida looking to add pieces this off-season, maybe a playoff run or two.
2005-06 UD Game Patch Series 2 Pronger 4-15 (3-colour)
I was happy to add this Pronger to my 05-06 UD Game Patch collection. It's becoming increasingly tough to track these down as I cross more off my wantlist. A nice 3-colour version can pretty much guarantee I won't need to upgrade in the future as well.
2005-06 SPx Rookies /1499
The design for these cards is awesome. So good in fact that UD decided to use it again for the 15-16 season I believe. I was lucky enough to find an ebay seller who had a large collection of these, all of which were rare 2 or 3-colour version. I decided to pick up all the ones I was missing and here they are:
And now onto the top 12!
#12. 2005-06 SPx Lundqvist Spectrum RC 22/25 (2-colour)
Sticking with the SPx theme, I was able to pick up some nice Lundqvist rookies from a longtime Lundqvist collector on this forum, including this nice SPx spectrum. This is also the only spectrum Lundqvist that I have seen that features a 2-colour swatch.
#11. 2005-06 Ultra Uniformity Patch Auto Lundqvist RC 5/5 BGS 9
Another Lundqvist from the PC pickup, I was very happy to add this to the collection. According to my findings, most if not all of the Lundqvists from this set feature a 1-colour white patch. Having 6 of these patches in total, I can appreciate how tough these can be to find, let alone graded mint 9!
#10. 2005-06 Hot Prospects White Parallel Lundqvist RC 4/5 (2-colour)
I'm sure by now you are sensing a theme within my top ten, Lundqvist heavy! It is a testament to the incredible Lundqvist collection the former PC collector was able to amass. This card sticks out because it is the only 2-colour version I have laid eyes on.
#9. 2005-06 UD Victory Black Anthony Stewart RC 4/5
Taking a break from the Lundqvist pickups, number 9 is a very rare victory black rookie of Anthony Stewart. I'm averaging less than one of these finds a month so its an understatement to say these are tough to find. The Stewart now brings me to a total of 55 victory black parallels, which equates to 18% of the set.
#8. 2005-06 The Cup Gold Lundqvist RC 7/30 (4-colour)
...... Aaaand right back to the Lundqvist cards haha. In my opinion the best release of Cup cards, especially the gold parallels. While I understand the value of a rookie numbered to 99, I personally like the gold versions even better. The 4-colours on this Lundqvist too makes it all the sweeter.
#7. 2005-06 UD High Glossy /10
The steady progression continued on this set, picking up 3 more over the course of the past 2 months. The Dumont was great to finally add since I missed out on acquiring one twice in the past. The Roenick was a great add from a player who is still active in the game from the broadcasting side of things. The Ballard YG was also a nice add since it has been a while since I added a YG HG. The three new additions gives me a total of 168/487 or 34% of the set.
#6. 2005-06 UD Victory Gold Crosby RC 30/100
The biggest card in the victory gold set is now officially crossed off! I was fortunate enough to find this on kijiji of all places at a fraction of the market cost. Its also quite a sharp, clean copy so I may send his off for grading i the future.
#5. 2005-06 Ultimate Debut Threads Patch and Signature Lundqvist 5/10 (2-colour)
Another piece from the Lundqvist additions, this card, limited to 10, is only the second copy I have seen to date. The patch appears to be a part of the "EW" in NEW YORK from either the shoulder patch or crest, depending on the jersey. I always love it when patch piece location can be identified.
#4. 2005-06 SPX SPXcitement Lundqvist Auto RC 5/5 PSA 10
Finally the best of the Lundqvist rookie crop. This card is not only the best version of this card I have seen, it is also the only one I have I have seen period! Love the design and look of these cards, and it is the first of the set for me.
And now the top 3!
#3. 2005-06 Black Diamond Onyx Jagr 1/1
This card was very much unexpected as I was scrolling through ebay not too long ago and I happened to notice the "onyx" description. At first glance you may not notice the rarity of the card but I was sure multiple Jagr fans would be all over it if I waited a few days. Luckily my offer was accepted and just like that I now have 10 total black diamond onyx 1/1s. That gives me 10/210 made or roughly 5% of the print run.
#2. 2005-06 UD Beehive Crosby Gold RC BGS 9.5
This card had been on my radar for a while now and I had been tempted numerous times to hit the BIN button. It was listed at an excellent price but I guess not many people are big fans of the beehive release. The gold versions are rumoured to be limited to 15, though they are not serial numbered. I figured I needed to pounce on it and not wait too long before I regretted it down the road.
And now for number 1........
#1. Sidney Crosby Used Stick (2009-10)
This is actually my first ever NHL used item, a Sidney Crosby stick from the 2009-10 season. The story I received from the gentleman who sold it to me was that Crosby gave him his stick at a Penguins practice his youth hockey team attended. Unfortunately the tape was also removed but all the correct markings are there to signify that this is indeed his stick. I never knew how straight his blade was, no wonder his backhands are so lethal! It is also the same type of stick he used during the famous 2010 olympics in while he scored the golden goal. Being from Nova Scotia, this is definitely the coolest memorabilia in my collection.
Well if you have made it this far, thank you for the time and please do not hesitate to contact me with information on cards I need or those you are looking to sell. Looking forward to what May will bring, comments/feedback are welcome and have a great Easter weekend everyone!
