Hi everyone, hope the new year has started out well for you all. I have seen some great threads and posts lately. Its always great seeing what other collectors are working on and picking up.

Well.... for as long as I can remember, I have been buying and collecting Mike Richter cards. I have always chipped away and have been attempting to acquire one of every card produced. At one point recently, I was down to only 90 different cards needed (not including 1/1s).

With the release of many different Leaf brands and sets over the last few years, my wantlist started to grow exponentially. Because of that, I simply can't justify buying the same card 5-8 times because of the different foil colors. With that said, I told myself that I would chase after only the unique 1/1s from Leaf (ie: One-Timers, Stick Nameplates, etc...)

So today I finally received the newest PC card for my Richter collection:

I love this card and am actively looking for this year's On-Timer jumbo patch as well.

I also just picked up this Super Mario parallel from one of my favorite sets of all time: 2000-01 Titanium Ice Blue Jersey Number Parallel /68 (*They made an error on the print run!)

** If anyone has any of these available I would love a shot at buying or trading for them.

Thanks for the look!

Terrific pickup; I'm sure you'll have made a few Cujo collectors jealous in the process :) I too have been bombarded with parallels in recent releases and have similarly tried to narrow my focus to more special pieces. It's a tough adjustment when you're used to chasing anything and everything on your list, but if I want to maintain an involvement in the hobby, showing discretion will be the only way.

Joe, thanks so much for the post. Yea as a player collector it has all of a sudden just become very overwhelming. I have been at this about 20 years and this is the first time I have ever remotely thought about not buying 1 of every Richter produced. I spoke to a ton of friends at the Expo this past November just trying to get my head around my thoughts to cut out the new Leaf products from my wantlist. I met a few people that only collected Upper Deck cards of their player and that made sense to me. But I also am a HUGE fan of the older ITG and BAP releases, so to cut Leaf out completely didn't work for me. At the end of the day it might sound "extreme" but I came to the conclusion that spending money buying the same card 6x or more with different foil colors was insane.... literally, on some level. That coupled with the airbrushing and many cards with no player image at all really pushed me to make the decision.

Glad to know I am not the only one out there making adjustments with all of the changes in the hobby. Thanks!

Justin, that Richter/Joseph is awesome. I'm with you too, it's impossible to keep up with all the parallels and different foil colors. Like you and Joe, I've also reduced my Hawerchuk pickups to only special pieces. Was an easy transition for me as I was never a completionist anyway.

Great pick ups. That Dual Name Plate is gonna tick off a few Joseph collectors too, but that's what happens when you make a dual 1/1!

I get what you mean about the multiple foil cards; I have been the same with the ITG Vault cards -- ultimately I decided not to go after any of them at all since there could be upwards of 10+ of the same card, with people selling them for the same price as pack pulled 1/1s. I got a couple when they first came out, but after that I was done. Shame; I liked the concept when it was first introduced.

Thanks for the post! Agreed on the Cujo comment. I figured I better grab it as there would be even more people interested because of Cujo on the back.

I made the same decision as you as well on the vault and show stamped cards. I have always stayed away from them. To me, they are not "real" cards as they are excess of the original print run.

Not very long ago, chasing after every Larry Murphy issue in any given year seemed like a reasonable goal. Not anymore. 15-16 ITGU came along with 4 basic Murphy issues, but had a total of 6 parallels of each. Leaf Ultimate was even worse. Will you hear me complain about the cards themselves? Absolutely not. Even when they didn't feature a headshot, ITGU more often than not had quality 3-color patches. And Ultimate, Leaf's first release with Murphy under contract, gave me headshots and autographs of him to go along with the quality GU. They're great looking cards, there's just...too many of them, and the parallels are too short-printed.

Dare I respond to that by cutting out ITG/Leaf? Of course not. Look at the Flickr site in my signature and you'll see, the majority of the GU cards there are ITG/Leaf. With the sale of my beloved 05/06 Stanley Cup Titlists, you could now say that my list of top 10 PC cards would be mostly (all?) ITG/Leaf. UD has included Murphy over the years, but not to the degree of those companies, whose niche products have given me so many nice cards. I know they've made some amazing Richter cards too - case in point, the card you just showed off to start this thread - so you're right, cutting out ITG/Leaf makes zero sense for either of us. Maybe the key is to be more selective and treat everything else as a bonus. If the market corrects itself on all the parallels and we can grab them on the cheap, great. If not, maybe we get just one nice copy and have to be happy with that. It's not as satisfying as catching them all, but it's not as expensive either :) And if it allows us to focus on pickups like your dual stick nameplate...I think we'll be alright, won't we?

Joe

Man, that stick nameplate is gorgeous! Always wanted one of those for my collection :)

Agreed -- to me they're up there with a shield for desirability (and I don't have a shield yet (unless you could the ones still on the hem of the jerseys I own?). Getting a dual with a player of Cujo's caliber? Talk about awesome.
