Top 10: Toronto Maple Leafs of all-time

Leafs Nation hates to be reminded, but it’s been 43 years and counting since the Stanley Cup was last paraded down Yonge Street. And that means you won’t find many (or any) Buds from recent years below. Sorry, Mats. Sorry, even, Mr. Sittler. You guys just didn’t make the grade. Who did? Find out now. This is THN.com’s Top 10 Maple Leafs of all-time.

10. Borje Salming, Hockey Hall of Fame inductee 1996

9. Dave Keon, HHoF 1986

8. Babe Dye, HHoF 1970

7. Ted Kennedy, HHoF 1966

6. ‘Busher’ Jackson, HHoF 1971

5. ‘King’ Clancy, HHoF 1958

4. Tim Horton, HHoF 1977

3. Charlie Conacher, HHoF 1961

2. Frank Mahovlich, HHoF 1981

1. Syl Apps Sr, HHoF 1961

Charles Joseph Sylvanus Apps was a great university football player and an Olympic pole-vaulter. He’s also known as the classiest guy to ever wear the Blue and White. He once offered to give back $1,000 of his $6,000 salary because he thought he was making too much and he enlisted in the army during World War II, costing him two years of NHL service. He was the league’s rookie of the year in 1937, was a five-time all-star and won the Lady Byng Trophy in 1942 after scoring 41 points in 38 games and not taking a single penalty. His son, Syl Apps Jr., played 11 NHL seasons; grandson Syl Apps III went to Princeton on a hockey scholarship and played minor pro; and, granddaughter Gillian Apps has won two Olympic gold medals in hockey with Canada and two golds and three silvers at the World Championship.

Wow, no Sittler and where is the love for the goalies? Thats a pretty tight list, not many leafs from the 70's on.

The list go by accomplishments and not fan favorites. Most living fans didn't get to watch most of that list, they certainly deserve to be on the list much more then Gilmour and Clark. I am not saying that they are more popular but if the list is for all-time greatest leafs then those 2 have no place a head of these guys. Bower certainly deserves to be there and Keon should be higher even in the top 3.

I'm not a Leafs fan but Keon anywhere other than #1 is a travesty

And Ron Francis was technically the best player to ever don the Maple Leaf :owned:

And the lack of love for goalies is disturbing on these lists - Turk Broda anyone?

True and not true :)

Well Dougie played 'only' 5-6 season's in Leafs but he still carry Maple Leafs most important (?) team record. 1992-93 most points (127)
He is also last Leaf who is got personal trophy, same season 92-93, Frank J.Selke and he was second for Hart after Lemieux.

So Dougie, Sundin and Bower should be in that list. Just IMO.

Harri

How is the overall points leader for the team not on the list? Im not a huge fan of how he left but surely he has to be there somewhere.

Jacque Plante.... Ron Francis.... Brian Leetch.... Gary Roberts.... I seen a pic of Gretzky wearing a leaf jersey as a 11 year old....

I know you're being funnny but there was nothing funny about Roberts as a Leaf. He was a fantastic player and representative of the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Probably missing someone but here are most of the favorites that I got to watch. There are a pile of 1-2 year guys taht I loved that joined the leafs (Belfour, Francis, Leetch, Gartner) + guys like Courtnall, Zezel, Frycer and a few other guys I loved but here is a fairly quick list of who I loved. Its hard to pick players that were dead before I was even born.

1 Sundin
2 Clark
3 Potvin
4 Roberts
5 Sittler
6 Gilmour
7 Vaive
8 Joseph
9 Salming
10 Kaberle

2 Sundin
3 Clark
4 Steve Thomas
5 Kenny Jonnson
6 Lanny MacDonald
7 Sittler
8 Sylvain Lefebvre
9 Gary Roberts
10 Ian Turnbull

A few others who I loved to watch play, Andreychunk, Gartner, Ellet, Macoun, Markov, Al Iafrate, Ron Ellis...
