Trade: Simon Gagne Traded To Tampa Bay

Wasn't too pleased with the return on our end. I'm sure there were other teams out there willing to trade more than 4 hockey pucks and a hockey stick. Its salary dump for sure, but jeeez.... we could of.. and should got more in return; at least a 2nd round pick. This trade along with signing of jody shelly leaves me wondering what the hell?

Im disliking Stevie Y more and more. Guy has a gun, a mask and he keeps robbing Homer.

Business standpoint this move makes sense. The return for Gagne was literally a bag of pucks. Really going to miss Gagne.

Gagne is quoted saying that Tampa Bay is the only team he was willing to waive his no-trade-clause to go to. Other reports suggested it was one of just a few teams -- but that the Kings were not one of them.

So, Holmgren's options were few, and he was going to lose the trade no matter what.

He was goign to lose, yes. But if Gagne really wanted to go to TB, and TB really wanted him, I figure they could have gotten something along the lines of Lundin and a 3rd. It's almost like Homer just heard a first offer and went, "Done" without trying to negotiate.

The rub is that TB didn't NEED Gagne as badly as Philly wanted to get something back for him. If Gagne only waived his no-trade clause for a few teams, there may really have been no better offer out there right now.

Unless TB can get a new contract done, Gagne is a rental, pure and simple, and it would be the same with any team that got him. Nobody is gonna give up even a middling prospect for a rental before the season starts because there's no need to absorb that salary if you're not a playoff contender.

Philly would have gotten a better return if they'd held onto Gagne until the trading deadline and moved him to a contender, some team who needed his services for a playoff push. Of course, there's the chance that he'd get hurt or underperform during the season and they may have gotten even less back or been unable to move him period.

Homer may not have gotten anything approaching equal value for Gagne, but you know what they say about a bird in the hand...
