Just curious if we could come up with a list of hockey's top 20 classic cards. I'll start with a few (no rankings just yet):

1979 OPC Wayne Gretzky Rookie

1986-87 PATRICK ROY OPC O-Pee-Chee Rookie

1971 Guy LaFleur O-Pee-Chee OPC Rookie

1966/67 BOBBY ORR Rookie

2005/06 SIDNEY CROSBY THE CUP AUTO PATCH ROOKIE RC /99

1985/86 MARIO LEMIEUX Rookie O-PEE-CHEE #9

I could go on, but wanted to give everyone a chance to chip in on a few.

His first card. ;)

the discussion begins and ends with the 63-64 parkhurst Gordie Howe American Flag card - the most beautiful card ever produced.

How about...

1958-59 Topps Bobby Hull
C56 Cyclone Taylor
1951-52 Parkhurst The Winning Goal
1971-72 OPC/Topps Ken Dryden (first card of a goalie wearing a mask, BTW)

Either the 1989-90 Pro Set card 1 "Brett Hull" promo, or "Ray Borque"

Absolutely. Either one is a strong representative of the rush to expansion that was the 1990-91 season. 1990-91 Score Eric Lindros is a good representative too, when we can recall a day when a card so massively overproduced could be worth $10. Or 1990-91 UD French Sergei Fedorov or Pavle Bure, where we essentially making excuses to create scarcity.

The Score one is a great example, yeah. I chose the "Borque" as part of the comedy of the expansion, but the Lindros deal was one of the ridiculous stunts Score tried, right there with the "BO" card.

I could see both a Pro Set card and the Score Lindros making it onto a list of 20 examples.

I assume the BO card was Bobby Orr card, and not the first game-used sweat card! :D

Personally I'm thinking that the Mike Bossy RC and the Bobby Orr retirement cards might make the bottom
of the top 20.

In no particular order, these cards are guaranteed to be in the top 20:

1911-12 Imperial Tobacco Georges Vezina C55
1966-67 Topps Bobby Orr RC
1951-52 Parkhurst Maurice Richard RC
1951-52 Parkhurst Gordie Howe RC
1971-72 OPC Guy Lafluer RC
1971-72 OPC Ken Dryden RC
1979-80 OPC Wayne Gretzky RC
1985-86 OPC Mario Lemieux RC
1986-87 OPC Patrick Roy RC

There's a lot of great cards many people will always associate with hockey and collecting the cards. But when I grew up I didn't see one store that didn't have the 94/95 Upper Deck #1 Gretzky enlarged advertising card on the storewindow. Must be a top 20 if anybody think collecting was big in the mid 90's

If the UD Pavel Bure card where he's wearing short-shorts and roller blades isn't added to this list, I don't know what to think of you people.

All good suggestions, I'll add or resuggest:

Brett Hull 88-89 OPC RC
Ovechkin 05-06 SP Authentic RC's (I think more so than The Cup RC's)

Already Noted:
51-52 Gordie Howe or Maurice Richard RC
George Vezina RC
Crosby 05-06 Young Guns Rookie Card

This "BO" card. The back was simply the name "BO".

The Score Bobby Orr inserts were cool. However, the BO hype was ludicrous.

How about the Gretzky card from OPC or Topps with the Thumbtack in the top corner?
His first card in a Kings Uniform.

Good one. The OPC and Topps cards had different photos in 1988-89. The OPC one, I believe, is an on-ice photo in a Kings jersey, probably from a photo shoot. The Topps one, aka "Wayne Gretzky Sweater", has him posed with the Kings "new style" jersey.
