Worst contract in league history?

Any amount of $ the Kings paid Roman Checmanic (and if my memory is good I think it was 3.75 mil per year)to play goal. And they paid him to go away!!This guy couldn't stop a beach ball and that's pretty important in LA!:|

I would vote for DiPietro's, simply because of the length of time involved in that contract. I don't think a goalie proves himself as a sure bet until he is 30 years old. Look at Jim Carey (the net detective). Within two years he goes from best young goalie in the NHL to working tables at Denny's.

If DiPietro proves to be an average goalie or injury prone with those bad knees, you are stuck with him for an eternity. So basically, you are putting the franchise on hold until you either move him or he dies. No one is going to take him with that contract.

Yashin is a VERY close second. They are still paying the guy for god's sake (until 2013).

In short, the Islanders have terrible habits when it comes to making contracts with their players.

C'mon! Choke-manek was a great goalie to have during the regular season. It's been a long time since Los Angeles has needed anything more! :)

A lot of what you people list are what are known as busts. To me, those aren't as stupid as throwing ludicrous amounts of money at player who don't deserve it, which is why I listed Martin LaPointe making $5.5M with Boston.

There's a chapter in Bruce Dowbiggin's Money Players called "The Education of Bobby Holik" in my hockey management and scouting course. It's amazing some of the lessons forgotten this quickly.

Walking away for nothing means getting nothing in return. The Sabres let Drury walk away with no return compensation. Ditto Briere and Dumont.

The only reason Briere is in this thread is because of recurring abdominal issues.

Well yeah you have a darn good point there regarding drury, briere, and dumont. Wasnt thinking of that. Speaking of Bruins, didnt the B´s get Bergeron with their compensatory pick for losing guerin?

To clarify this thread, yeah it might sound awkward to judge signings and contracts years after they hve been signed. But in reality, what else do we have to go by. Many peopel thought the Yashin deal was bad when it happened, many didnt. What if Yashin put up 4 years of 40+ goals and 90-100 points? Then we wouldnt be having this talk.

All we have to work with is the dollar value and length of the deal, and compare it to the production. A bad contract is any time the team does not get its moneys worth, whether it is due to injury, overhype, or falling off the face of the earth. Does it matter?

It is kind of like judging first round draft picks, there are so many players that went first round that make me chuckle, but I guarantee no one was laughing at the time of the draft. What makes the draftee a huge bust (and therefore candidate for worst draft pick ever) is only told by time.
