I have been trawling hockey sites of late to help me finish off my list of all players ever to dress for the Flames and as such have seen lots of stats and figures and it peaked my interest that if you could put together your teams all time best starting lineup who would it be?

From what info I have gained (and i will let issues of having 2 right sided players slide ect) this would be the best Flames lineup I could muster

(A tough call but his win lossration is the best and he has the highest number of SO's so even tho he has less wins than Vernon..............)

Nicklas Lidstrom ( Oh that was tough!)
Vladamir Konstantinov (Although his career was cut short - in my mind he would have been one of the Wings all-time greats.

Okay if you do not like that choice - can I choose Chris Chelios... even though he played only the last 9 years in Detroit, I will go on his career. One of the best Penalty Kill D-men I have ever seen and such a contrast to the way Lidstrom operates.

PS: I do not ever remember seeing Red Kelly play in a Wings Uni.

Center - no doubt about it Stevie Y!!!! If you need to ask why, go collect Pokeman!!

Right Wing - again, no doubts. Gordon Howe - at least I got to see him in the Red & while growing up. If you do not think he was one of the 3 best hockey players ever than you need to do some reading. And I mean the stories from his teammates - not the history books.

Left Wing - I really have to go with Brendan Shanahan. He was the real catalyst for the recent Stanley Cup run - what a sight to see in a hockey player. He can score, he can pass and he can stand up for his teammates. He even played on the Penalty Kill when he first came to the Wings.

Goalie - Can I choose Hasek even though he was really at the end of his career in 01/02??? He was really only about 80% of his Buffalo skills - but that was enough on the Wings Cup team. But in his day - he was one of the 3 or 4 best I ever saw.

If I cannot choose hasek - I would go with Sawchuk - cause he was another of the best ever. You just cannot compare the goalies of old with the goalies of today.


I won't put together the stats - but suffice it to say that the forward lines have over 2000 Goals and 2500 Assists. That is definitely not chopped liver!!!

Left Wing- Mark Messier (played LW in his early years)

Defense- Paul Coffey

Defense- (Oh god I hate to say this) Chris Pronger (OOWWW, that hurts!)

Goalie- Grant Fuhr, Backup Goalie- Curtis Joseph

This could be bias talking, but I don't know;

Centers; Sakic And Yzerman. Pretty much tied there.

Left Wings; Shanahan and Forsberg. Close, with Shanahan taking a slight edge.

Right Wings; Hejduk And Howe. OKay, you got me beat there.

Defense:Lidstrom/Konstantinov And Foote/Bourque. I'd say the advantage is for the Avs, a shut down D.

Goalies: Roy And Hasek. Roy takes the advantage.

It would certainly be a game to watch though! :beer:

I really don't think you can compare players from different eras... I have a hard time believing that Scott Stevens wouldn't have crushed any number of players from the "vintage" era into oblivion with a single hit. I am also personally more impressed by Cups won post-expansion, due to the obvious reason that the road to get there is a lot longer.

**Note that I did not say "tougher", but for me a Cup won via 4 best of 7 series is the only way to go.**

As noted above, the Devils have to go with:

A-Line
Stevens/Nieds
Marty

If we're allowed to pick specific seasons for a player it gets more interesting... how about '01 Mogilny, or '06 Gionta?

I would have to respectfully disagree with you on this, Gilles, Trottier, and Bossy up front, Potvin and Morrow on D, and Smith in goal. Kaspir was my favorite player growing up, what he did to Lemieux in the 93 playoffs was great but personally I can't put him as one of the 2 best Islander D-men of all time. Ziggy was nice on really bad teams, but bottom line is what did he win. Pat was great but he was no Trots.

i dont know how you can say this......i have no doubt that scott stevens could have played in the six team league but he would at best have been an average playerm and he would'nt have taken liberties like he did in a 30 team league...if he hit bobby hull or gordie howe like he did lindros or kariya they woulda got up and killed him
