The fight for last overall - Saturday April 2

Updated Thursday morning, April 7

Notes:

Leafs in last overall - rejoice Leaf fans!!!!

Too bad the last overall team has the 'lousiest' chance of getting the first overall pick in any year since the lottery system started.

Toronto 13 games below 2 games remaining - Philadelphia, New Jersey

Edmonton 12 games below 1 game remaining - Vancouver

Columbus 8 games below 2 games remaining - Buffalo, Chicago

Calgary 7 games below 2 games remaining - Vancouver, Minnesota

Vancouver 7 games below 2 games remaining - Calgary, Edmonton

Winnipeg 6 games below 2 games remaining - San Jose, Los Angeles

The sad thing is that the Vancouver management group thought they still had a chance at the playoffs at the trading deadline and now they are within spitting distance of last overall in the NHL. Not sure if they were delusional or just wearing rose coloured glasses?

My best,

Ken

I'm upset because the leafs have a good chance to finish last when the league changes the lottery rules but I think it's a good thing to lottery the top three picks. Hopefully Edmonton doesn't get one

I would not be surprised if Mathews agent tells teams up north not to draft him if they have the 1st overall pick. I think he's going to try and dictate what team he plays for. He can stay overseas and make 7 figures if he doesn't go to a team he "wants to".

I've seen some interesting packages the Coyotes might dangle to trade for the number 1 pick if they don't win it in the lottery. If OEL is really included in the package, along with the Yotes number 1 pick for the next two years, is there a team in the bottom 6-8 who would be stupid enough to pass on that trade offer?

Leafs young players are playing well. A lot of fast young guys playing a solid system, I can't get over their speed ESP on the forecheck. Bernier is playing like he did in LA. Funny how he has his confidence back since they traded Reimer.

I honestly am happy the way the kids are playing for us Leafs. I would be ecstatic to have the first pick but at the same time, I am happy to be watching games again. They are fast and exciting to watch. I think we have like 12 picks this draft so anything can happen.

Honestly if EDM gets the pick again, I am not sure what else I can say that would be SFW for these boards. I can tell you this, if Toronto got Austin, man this place would go nuts.

You can bet those two games at the end of the season between Edmonton and Vancouver aren't going to be defensive clinics.

But I can't believe that Edmonton is still in the mix.

Unfortunately I would much rather have seen Winnipeg bottom out next year and get Nolan Patrick instead of have a poor season this year... We shall see how they finish off.

Could you imagine the Fall Expo with UD1 on the floor with Nylander AND Matthews Leafs rookies?

I'm in total agreement though, if the Oilers end up with the #1 pick again, they should be relegated to the AHL and feel shame :) :P

If by some chance the :oilers: do win.

I hope that they attempt to package it off (+) to the :yotes: for OEL and their pick. :D

This.

AM would be huge in Arizona, and the Oilers need qualified NHL defensemen. It's a win-win for both sides, but we'll see if it goes through. I can't imagine any other winning team trading it to Arizona, but you never know.....

Considering all 7 Canadian teams are currently in the bottom 10, and have a combined 70% chance of winning the draft, there is NO way an agent could convince them all to pass on him. Besides, based on what the Nordiques got for Lindros, why not draft him and trade him if absolutely necessary? How stupid would the team 1st overall look if they passed on him at #1 only to have him go to another Canadian team at #2?

I am still hopeful he lands in Toronto myself for the sake of my team, but Maple Leaf cardboard for next season would be quite crazy if he ends up there!

I hope he ends up in Toronto, honestly I do. It would be nice to see him get the Toronto crazy love for his cards, and I would still draft him if I had the pick. The problem is if a team drafts him, it would have to be an immediate trade so they can get the other teams first round pick in the same draft, otherwise do they really want to take a pick or two in the following years draft?

I really hope he doesn't pull a Lindros, but with the exchange rate and his desire to make $ as we've already seen, something tells me he's going to "demand" he plays in Arizona or California. I would also not be shocked to see Arizona win the golden frozen ticket, we've already seen what Bettman and company are willing to do for the Arizona franchise....

Is there not a rule that a new draft pick cannot be traded for a certain period of time? I thought I saw that somewhere? A team can trade the pick, but not the player they picked with that choice.

I can't see Arizona trading OEL even one-for-one for Austin Matthews, so the thought that they would trade OEL plus draft picks is ludicrous. OEL is one of the top 5 young defensemen in the league, and currently the cornerstone of the Arizona franchise. Sidney Crosby himself wouldn't put butts in the seats in Arizona, so I don't see what the draw would be for them to draft Matthews anyway. He's a good player, but he is far from the type who would be a franchise saviour.

Has anyone suggested that that would be the case? I've only seen Matthews + for OEL, not the other way around.

From a purely hockey perspective, no team would give up #1 overall for OEL without a contract extension. He only has 3 years left on his current deal, and no team would give up a #1 overall pick (except maybe the Oilers *eyes rolling*) for a potential 3 year rental, especially if one of the lower teams get him.

The case could be different if a team like the Red Wings lucked out and won the lottery. But even then, they would want more long term security.

There are too many unknowns right now because we don't know which pick the Yotes would get anyway. If they get 1st overall, then this discussion if moot. If they get 2nd, the price to move up would be less. If the Yotes end up with #10 pick, then it will cost them a lot more to move up to #1.

There are people in this thread alone who have mentioned OEL plus picks.
