Here is one of mine that has recently popped up, it may have been something the people have been going nuts over before, but I never noticed it as egregiously as in the last year or so, and it is very rampant in basketball, football, and baseball cards nowadays. Not as much in hockey...yet. Here it is:
In my opinion, putting a premium on a "color matched" parallel card is probably the dumbest selling point in the history of the hobby. Oh, it is a red parallel of this player's card that is worth $3 in trade...but what's this? They are also wearing a red home jersey? "Color match" because it is red and he is wearing red in the picture so let's ask $20 because it is a color match....wow.
I think it is absolute silliness and much worse than the "eBay 1/1" folks.
2017 In The Game Superlative Signatures Gold #SSLM1 Larry Murphy 1/1 by primetimepawich, on FlickrI agree with each point, with a real soft spot for mini cards!
Another topic, although perhaps too high level. In my opinion, the hobby made the transition from a hobby to an industry somewhere near the turn of the century, and is now morphing into a greed-based investment option. I’m so glad I’m at the back end of collecting and just grabbing the odd piece here and there. I can’t imagine many new “collectors” looking to hockey cards for enjoyment. It’s currently somewhere between an expensive habit, and a greed-addiction. It’s too bad for the average collector.
- Presidents Choice is actually good (minus the cards w/ a paintbrush photo)
- mem cards > autos
- too many garbage parallels/tech/manufactured patch cards
- 95% of UD products aren't even "fun" to open anymore
You could buy established good Hall of famers for less than some of these young kids ... it's gotten freaking ridiculous !I agree with #1, would never pay to have someone else tell me what condition my card is in.
#2, don’t mind either jumbo or smaller cards,.
#3 Not Bedard’s fault but series two has been priced out of reach for a bunch of us. Looks like this maybe the future for collecting, so called generational players driving the market too high for the average collector. just my two cents, ignore as needed.
Cheers
Dan.
I'm with you on the graded. As was already mentioned - when I was in the market for a Gretzky RC a bunch of years ago..... I was only interested in a graded copy, because there's was too many fakes out there.
For vintage cards, I do get the appeal. A PSA 8 is going to be rare for a card from 1975.
Modern? I don't understand the appeal at all. Don't get me wrong - I recognize that a PSA 10 McDavid YG is going to sell for a lot more than a raw copy will..... so if you're looking to flip cards, there's value to be gained in getting them graded (people WILL pay that premium). For a collector wanting to simply own the card? That's what I don't get (unless you're planning to own it, until it's time to flip it....).
I was chatting with another member the other day about some of the stuff I've seen slabbed out there. I question why on earth someone would spend the money to get A Leaf Patch / Auto card, numbered /5, graded (particularly when it was clearly NOT a 10... the card in question got an 8). Another was a UD Buyback Autograph, that had been slabbed as 'Authentic'. Ummm, okay? How is that going to add "value" to those cards?
I can accept that a Bedard YG that gets a PSA 10 is worth more than a PSA 9, or a raw version - you've spent the money to show that yours is in perfect condition, separating it from those that are not. But if the print run is tiny, and it's a card that isn't going to have a lot of market activity - why bother? The only answer I can come up with, is that there's a segment of the hobby who thinks you need to grade anything that has value.
I'll admit too, part of my issue with graded cards extends to slabbed cards of any kind.... and also to booklets, jumbos or tallboys. I can't put them with the rest of my cards, so it's a pain! Some of them do look great though (Minis, at least, can still be stored with regular sized one).

It’s crazy how we can get a nice rookie of a legend like Peter Stastny for much cheaper than these prospects! You could buy established good Hall of famers for less than some of these young kids ... it's gotten freaking ridiculous !
It's happened in football with all the young quarterbacks I could buy nice Joe Montana cheaper than a Cam Ward etc you got to be kidding me
I also crack all slabs.I open all graded cards…
