OVERALL POINTS
1. N. Lidstrom/M. Schneider (Det) 139
2. MCCABE/KABERLE (TO) 135
3. Sergei Zubov/P. Boucher (Dall) 114
4. L. Visnovsky/Joe Corvo (LA) 107
5. Rob Blake/ J. Liles (Col) 100
6. Chris Pronger/J. Spacek (Edm) 99
7. K. Timonen/M. Zidlicky (Nash) 99
8. Wade Redden/Zdeno Chara (Ott) 93
McCabe & Kaberle are a close 2nd, and a mile ahead of anyone else in the East. Now let's see how these 8 specific groups rank in other categories compared to each other.
TOTAL GOALS
1. N. Lidstrom/M. Schneider (Det) 37
2. L. Visnovsky/Joe Corvo (LA) 31
3. Sergei Zubov/P. Boucher (Dall) 29
4. MCCABE/KABERLE (TO) 28
5. Rob Blake/ J. Liles (Col) 28
6. Wade Redden/Zdeno Chara (Ott) 26
7. Chris Pronger/J. Spacek (Edm) 24
8. K. Timonen/M. Zidlicky (Nash) 23

1. MCCABE/KABERLE (TO) 107

8. Rob Blake/ J. Liles (Col) 13
GAME WINNING GOALS
1. MCCABE/KABERLE (TO) 8
2. Wade Redden/Zdeno Chara (Ott) 7
3. N. Lidstrom/M. Schneider (Det) 6
4. L. Visnovsky/Joe Corvo (LA) 6
AVERAGE ICE TIME (Individuals)
1. BRYAN MCCABE (TOR) 28:17
2. TOMAS KABERLE (TOR) 28:10
3. Niklas Lidstrom (Det) 28:06
4. Chris Pronger (Edm) 27:59
5. Zdeno Chara (Ott) 27:11
On closer inspection, Lidstrom and Schneider may be a little better than our Dynamic Duo, but not by very much. So what are the Leafs really getting for their $10 million investment? Out of the top 8 point-scoring defense pairs in the NHL, we have a pair who are:
2nd in points
2nd in power play goals
4th in goals
1st in assists
1st in game winning goals
1st and 2nd in ice time

Totally missed this before, but have you been watching Pronger in these playoffs? He's playing like a man possessed, he's tied for 3rd in playoff scoring with 17 pts in 17 games. Not to mention that the Oilers are going to the Cup final. I dunno about you, but I think he's well worth what Edmonton is paying for him because I don't think they make it to the finals without him.MIKEYSLEAFS said:5 million is a steal cosidering bums like federov and pronger were making 10 million not too long ago

They're making less over a shorter time frame. They're not good contracts, don't get me wrong, but McCabe's is terrible in comparison with regards to future implications for the Leafs.DredJAw said:The same amount that Rathje, Hatcher have been in with the Flyers
If people think Mccabes contract is an albatross what is Hatcher+Rathje?

The Cup finals comment was a comparison to guys like Pronger, Lidstrom et al. who are making the same or a bit more and are actually justified in bringing in those paychecks, unlike McCabe.
Sure Hatcher and Rathje are both a little overpaid, but they look like paupers compared to McCabe now.
MIKEYSLEAFS said:there is a guy called roloson thats brought edmonton into the playoffs, without the goalie change they would of finished 10th or 11th,not pronger, cmon that should be a no brainer, rolo has been fantastic, don't take that away from him saying its pronger, pronger has been there all year and they would of missed the playoffs, tied for third just in the playoffs, maybe likes the big games, what did he do all year wes?????and comparing defensemen and mentioning one player taking them to the finals, cmon thats childish, lets remember hockey is a team sport, are you saying if the leafs had pronger they would be in the finals,i think not, there is other problems in t.o
ITS NOT ROCKET SCIENCE
crankshaft said:Hey Mikey, actually Roloson definitely did not GET THEM into the playoffs! He was there just at the end and actually he was only .500 in the regular season with the Oilers. I actually thought there was no way in hell they were going anywhere in the playoffs with Roloson, because he honestly was not playing well. Once the playoffs started, the Oilers played a totally different style of game where they blocked all kinds of shots and barely any of them even make it to Roloson. I don't think you can point to one player on the Oilers and say this is the reason they are in the finals, you have to point to the coach and the leaders on the team, including Pronger. Roloson has played well, but he is definitely not the reason they are in the finals. THe team has been playing so well together, blocking shots and all kinds of scoring opportunites and they have gelled as a team.
To say that Roloson got them to the playoffs is just plain incorrect. After all, he was only there for a month before the playoffs and he definitely wasn't stellar by any means, with an 8-7 record.
As for the Toronto Defensemen, well, they had 135 points between the two of them, which is great, but when they are both -1, thats just not good. It doesn't matter how many points you get if you are not even on the positive side at the end of the season...
