NHL's Reply to Asian Knockoff Jerseys

The price is no excuse.

You don't want to pay the price for the legal item, you don't make the purchase. It doesn't justify breaking the law and screwing those of us doing legitimate business, no matter how you try to rationalize it.
 
I don't buy no-name mayonnaise, I buy Hellman's. I don't buy no-name ketchup, I buy Heinz. Many people are like me - they want the quality and don't mind paying a little more for that quality.

Knockoffs are illegal, period.

You realize that in about 90% of cases in your local grocery store that those no name brands are done by the same companies that produce the brand names, right? (usually outsourced by both companies to the same place)

Sometimes there's a slight difference in quality, but not enough to justify paying double for ketchup.

Frozen OJ is frozen OJ... why pay $1.99 when an IDENTICAL product is $1.18?

And yeah, those Brand Power commercials tick me off too.

Difference is that the food examples are legal. The jersey thing? Gimme my CCMs in the closet... RBK sucks anyway.

What's more reasonable? If the prices were $60-$80 for a premier and $160-$180 for an authentic with no name would more people buy the real thing rather then paying $70 for a fake with name? I don't think so.

Rather then purchasing the fake be more of a savy shopper and look for deals, I collect jerseys and always find premiers and authentics for really good prices. A lot of people say that if the price was lower then more people would be inclined to buy the real stuff, quess what? The price is lower if you look around for it but in the end it's almost impossible to compete with the low price of the fake.

Here's some example of good deals I've found for 100% authentic RBK edge jerseys. My Sharks edge cost me $140, Leafs edge $125, Avalanche edge $50 (that's less then the price of a fake :eek:)

The_Icebox, I hear you and agree with you that these fakes are taking food off your table.

Your points are 100% valid and I would probably have the same arguments if somebody was hurting my business. My bone of contention is the NHL's attempt at the cash grab at the expense of the fans. How many members of HI own a store-bought replica jersey ($139.00) or an authentic jersey ($299.99) plus the name and number (+$100.00!!) plus sales tax (12% in Quebec - it was 15.5% a few years ago)? Now out of those, how many of those are a Hossa Pens, Kovalev Hab, Kessel Bruin or a Heatley Sens? Now my last question is - how many of those jerseys still get worn out of the house? I'm sure that hurts, no? Blame it on free agency or the New NHL, but those duds are duds!

BTW, for those who own a fake, the Montreal Canadiens have come up with a trade-in offer. Trade in a fake and get $50 off on the purchase of an official replica and $100 off the purchase of an authentic (pro stitching and fight strap). So now's the time to trade in all the Kovalev, Koivu, Latendresse, Ryder, Streit, Huet, Higgins, Komisarek and Laraque jerseys! But who do you get? Halak or Price? Make sure you pick the right one!! There will be no trade-in on these!! Or just play it safe and pick, Beliveau, Richard, Lafleur or Dryden!

Wouldn't this trade-in program promote the purchase of fakes?

I can buy a $55 fake and trade it in for a $100 credit.

Yeah, but you'd have to gamble on a $400.00 jersey!! (Actually you'd only have to fork out $300.00 plus taxes after trade-in.)

Buying a jersey with a player's name and number on it is a leap of faith that you have to make if you want to have that. But it's also part of the way the system is now - with the salary cap and free agency, player movement is a fact of life.

If you absolutely want to play it safe, don't get the name and number on the jersey - just wear your team's colours. Putting the name and number of your favourite player is YOUR choice, no one is forcing you to do that.

If you want a jersey so badly, you'll still go out and get it, it just means a box or two less that you end up ripping or a high end single. It's still about choices.

Judging by the Habs offer, I'm guessing that the sales of knockoff jerseys in the Montreal area are so widespread, they're having to resort to these types of measures in order to get as many of them off the streets as possible, because the team isn't really making much off those sales.
 
I think the overwelming conclusion is ... Personal choice.

There are many examples ... no name vs Heinz, tax evasion, legal/illegal.

It all comes back to personal choice - period.

It's against the law to speed.... Unfortunatley, my car does not seem to handle properly at those slower speeds.

One thing I will say however is that your outlook would change if affected you directly. Wayne sells jerseys but imagine if you worked at RBK and word came out that because of the invasion of knoeck offs, you are laid off... That would put a different twist on it for you.

Like Paypal "Gift", Bruce has made it clear what is acceptable on here. What you do everywhere else is your personal choice.

I agree. I'm the same exact way. I've paid $200+ each for my legit Brassard and Russell jerseys from the arena and I enjoy them b/c I know they are real. I don't think I could enjoy a fake one as much b/c I'd know it was fake.

It's kind of like buying your wife a fake diamond ring, it's cheaper and looks pretty similar to the naked eye, but who would really do that?
 
The brick and mortar guys have the biggest beef here. These knockoffs ARE cutting the legs out from people who carry legit jerseys, but here's the problem: those legit jerseys are too damned expensive, and this is no fault of guys like Wayne who sell jerseys. Queue "the Evil Empire" music as the NHL Licensing people walk into the room...

I'm going to throw my hat in the ring by saying that I don't, FOR ONE SECOND, feel sorry for the Montreal Canadiens, Toronto Maple Leafs or anyone else in the NHL who "suffers" from this injustice. If the Leafs can pay Jeff Finger what he's making, why the hell should I care?

I do feel for the vendors who will pay for the knockoffs in the end by loss of employment or loss of income. Those are the guys who suffer the most. Do you think the NHL gives a rat's left one about those guys? Hardly.

i will buy what i want, when i want and how i want. its my money,i earned it, ill spend it how i wish. but i will not force my actions onto anyone else. its all about me myself and i. i will enjoy my knockoff while wearing it, and ill enjoy my authentic just as much while its sitting pretty on the hanger.

The fact of the matter is we all do it!!

How many songs on your or your kid's IPod, ITouch, IPhone etc were purchased? The same goes for the software on your computer? Every last program on your PC was purchased via a legit source? This is a tender subject with you because it affects you directly.

If you do not deal with any of the issues I mentioned above, then you are a better man than, I would guess 99.9% of the population!

I think the NHL should start making knockoff... asians. Or Authentic Knockoffs.

Well heck....just bought a good old authentic Maple Leaf Reebok jersey off NHL.com for $79 and free shipping. Some of those sales are pretty good.......(not personalized of course). Shipped in one day, and its real purty.
