Official 2008 NHL Entry Draft Thread

My happiness as a Hawks fan who thought the team was moving in the right direction, just turned to pure disgust. They took the one guy ranked in the top 12 who I absolutely did not want them to take. They were doing so well lately, Barker, Byfuglien, Keith, Seabrook, Skille, Kane, Toews.............. KYLE FREAKIN BEACH? :|:|:|:|

I've watched every game this kid has played the last two years, and he is a complete WASTE of an 11th overall pick. He will never see the NHL ice, and the way he's going he will have to retire from hockey from too many concussions within the next 3 years. He is a meathead who thinks he is a pwer forward who can fight, but he's lost every fight he's ever been in. He is probably the most hated player in the WHL, even the Everett fans can't stand him.

The Wings win another stinkin cup and the Hawks draft Kyle Beach. The Crown Royale started flowing heavily about an hour ago.

HAHAHAHA, I just checked the on screen Guide description for the draft tonight, on Comcast, and it says "The annual player secletion............ The Chicago Blackhawks have the first pick this year after winning the draft lottery." Thats a little behind, and pretty funny.

I'm thinking Versus sent bad information - my local cable (Armstrong) yielded the same results.

Luke Schenn is Bryan McCabe minus the offensive talent.

You've obviously never watched him play. He's an absolute beast in his own end. A terror. He's actually more like Dion Phaneuf minus the offense. The best comparable would probably be Adam Foote. TSN agrees (they showed a 'comparable' clip when he was drafted).

Here's what some scouts and coaches have said:

"He's the best defensive defenceman in the draft and probably the best in over a decade, maybe two decades," said Grant McCagg, publisher of the McKeen's Hockey Draft Guide. "I can't think of the last guy that came out of the draft that's as good defensively right now as Luke Schenn is."

"A big guy that plays a robust game," a WHL coach explained. "He makes every player on the ice honest out there because he can stiffen you up at any time. He's solid defensively and I think he's gotten better as an offensive defenceman. Really reliable, competes hard and brings it every shift. Real character guy. You can see the other players on his team look up to him."

"The physical presence is top of the heap," McCagg said. "Great positionally, very good defensive instincts, highly competitive and he's not afraid of anything out there. He's going to be a shut down defenceman for 15 years on your team."

Did you watch the World Juniors? The kid looked fantastic. As for the McCabe comparrison, the guy is almost the definition of a defensive defenseman and very physical.

I'm very happy with the pick.

I'm very happy with the pick.

To be honest, I'm ecstatic with the pick. I haven't said that about a Leaf move in 4 years and I'm not joking. Ok Toskala made me happy but not ecstatic.

Anyways, Luke Schenn is the definition of a defensive defeceman. He epitomizes defensive defeceman. Brian Mccabe is the furthest thing from it.

You can put Mccabe and Schenn on the team next year and there is no question is better defensively and plays the PK.

Really Ern? I'm in WHL country, where Luke plays, remember. ;)

If you ask anyone who watches the WHL regularly if Luke Schenn is anywhere even close to Dion Phaneuf's caliber during Dion's days in the WHL, they will all laugh. Was he the most physical defenseman in this draft? No, I think Bogosian hits harder and is overall head and shoulders above Schenn in every category.

TSN shows you the clip their agent put togethcer for the scouts, teams, and TV people. So you see 10 seconds of good plays, what about the rest of the time? I've watched the kid play for 2 years now, and my opinion is he is nothing to jump up to number 5 and grab, he might be Bryan McCabe with no offense, or basically Barret Jackman.

I'm glad you aren't a scout ;)

No worries, I'm glad Leaf fans are happy. They better be, they gave up a lot to move up and get him. I'm sure he will pan out just fine and exceed all the Leaf fans expecatations, just like all their recent draft picks...... Heck, the way the Leafs are pumping him up, he's the next Scott Stevens, a steal at number 5 I tell ya. :)

Going by the logic of their horrible draft history, then giving up an extra 2nd and 3rd rounder isn't giving up a lot to get him.

No one said he was a steal at 5, but he was pretty much the consensus number 5 pick, and I highly doubt he would have been around at 7.

Also, you should know better than to listen to "Leafs Nation"...a lot of Leaf fans can't even stand "Leafs Nation".

All I'm saying is the Leafs gave up a lot to get a non-offensive number 3 or 4 guy who will do nothing but try and take the body. He doesn't even block shots. The Leafs are supposedly in rebuilding mode, they need all the picks they can get to build up some youth on the farm. If they moved up to ensure they got the next best offensive player and wanted to take a chance on Filitov, I could understand it. But to give up 3 picks for a guy that is a halfway decent skater with no offense from the blueline, well, that's the Leafs for ya I guess.

Tony, no offence, don't pigeon hole the guy just yet.

a) The Leafs weren't the only team to give up assets and move up. Like 4 or 5 other teams did it in the first round.

b) Schenn is extremely highly touted and a concensus top 5-6 pick.

c) Your the only guy I've heard talk negative about him yet ;) Not 'the second guy' but literally the only guy. I was at the draft yesterday and heard quite a few raving reviews from numerous people. The sens fan beside me was pretty upset the Leafs got him :)

I like some of Torontos later picks. Haynes is a monster, while Stefanovich could be an interesting one down the road.

And of course 2 Greyhounds go in the 3rd Round: James Livingston and Andrew Campbell!

No offence taken Ern, just giving my opinion of the guy. I watched a lot of defensemen come through the WHL lately Weber, Phaneuf, Seabrook, Byfuglien, Barker, Hamhuis, etc and all I'm saying is Schenn is not even close talent wise. Maybe that changes, but my opinion after seeing the type of talent on D that comes from the WHL, I don't see him even being a Brendan Witt type talent. Hell, Matthew Spiller was 5 times the players Schenn is in the WHL, and look what happened to him. The only reason he's getting a sniff of the NHL is because he's on the island. The Coyotes wouldn't even give him a job, and they spent the high draft pick on him! Zach FitzGerald hit 10 times harder then Schenn, fought more then Schenn, and was one of the most feared D-men in the WHL, he's struggling to make it.

It's just an opinion based on what I've seen of the guy compared to other d-men. My opinion, giving up 3 picks and taking him 5 was a huge stretch. The NHL is faster, smaller, and more skilled. You don't see many Derian Hatcher's drafted into the NHL anymore, and that's what I think of when I watch Schenn.

Tony, you just have to bear with us Leafs fans, we haven't had much to cheer about the past few years, lol. I respect your opinion ,having seen him play in person. At the same time all the scouts and people who have a say in the matter had him rated right where he was. As far as giving up 3 picks, flipping #7 for #5 can't really be brought into the equation. I guess we'll just have to hope he pans out nicely in the show.

Dan.
