Sens sign Turris ... 5 yrs

Seems like everyone is getting overpaid these days. Seems like the market is right as they continue to sign players for crazy amounts of money yet they are about to lock them out AGAIN for that exact reason (or at least its 1 of the big reasons). It really makes no sense at all.

Good signing, he just needs playing time and someoneto believe in him.. He finished well last year and should continue to show why he drafted #3..

$3.5 million per year seems awfully high, at least until he shows some consistency. Hope it works out for both parties, as the potential still seems to be there for him to turn into a good player.

Turris is getting 3.5 million a season and Tavares signed an extension last year that pays him 5.5 million a season. The money for Turris doesn't make sense to me. Can't blame him for agreeing to the contract. Seems like they are paying more for the player he was supposed to be when he was drafted. Hope the kid can produce.

I'm still learning the sport but I don't understand how anyone could say it's a good signing by the Sens. $3.5M sounds insane for me given Turris' career numbers. I mean Claude Giroux is a $3.75M cap hit in the last two years of his bridge contract. Letang's hit is $3.5M for the final two years and Couture's final two? $2.875M.

$3.5M...and for 5 years? Insane.

Inflated contracts like Turris' are one of the reasons we're probably headed for a third lockout in twenty years.

Ridiculous, honestly.

Last season the Coyotes and Turris fought tooth and nail for $1.4M/year. He eventually (after a LONG holdout) signed a 2 year deal for $2.8M total. Coyotes didn't want to pay him over $1.5M a year... Turris wanted like $2 or $2.5M.

What does he do?

He plays 55 games this year, scores 12 goals, 17 assists for 29 points and gets a 5 year extension for $3.5M per year?

Where was this sort of deal 10 months ago? What did he do to JUSTIFY that sort of contract? Clearly it CAN'T be his 0.53 PPG pace (that's 43 points over a full year).

No seriously, what changed in 10 months? I get the fact he did show some progression, and it looks like he will be a serviceable player but he did nothing to warrant a significant contract.

I guess the Sens see something in him the world does not...

I mean, if he turns into the next Cheechoo and puts up a 40 spot then yes good deal. But he could easily turn in to the next Cheechoo and mean nothing to the team. Aren't the sens already paying JC for just that???

This contract is based on potential rather than production. I think this is a good signing for Ottawa. It's not just Ottawa overpaying.....most of the teams are overpaying for players. (ie: Jeff Finger) Turris wasn't the only one in the desert that wasn't producing either. He has a clean slate now so we'll see just how well he has progressed playing under McLean. Until the new CBA is ratified the player costs will continue to be insane. Ottawa has plenty of room now that the cap is at $72 million.

Claude Giroux signed his current contract on November 8, 2010. He scored 47 points in 82 games the season before signing the contract. You can't look at his 2010-11 numbers because he only signed a month into the season. If he had waited until the end of the season he would have got paid a lot more, Philly got a huge steal. His next contract is going to be worth a lot more!

Kris Letang signed his current contract on March 30, 2010. During the 2009-10 season he had 27 points in 73 games (60th in D-man points). He is going to get paid a lot more when his current contract expires as well.

Logan Couture signed a fair deal for both sides but only at 2 years, San Jose played it safe to make sure he is consistent. I imagine his next contract will be similar to the one Taylor Hall just signed, although probably more.

I would imagine Kyle Turris' contract will look extremely good in the next couple of years as well. He showed a lot of skill with Ottawa last season and he put in a ton of work to get stronger this offseason.

An imagination is just about the only thing that can justify Turris' contract because his production won't.

1) As a sophomore, Letang was the top d-man and had 13pts in the playoffs on the way to the Cup.
---As a sophomore, Turris was playing in the AHL.

2) Couture had 32G 24A and was even better in the playoffs leading up to his contract.
---Turris has 31G 44A in his entire career.

3) At 21, Giroux had 27pts in 42 games (52pts/82g pace). He doubled his production at 22 and was a monster in the playoffs.
---At 20, Turris had 20pts in 63 games (26pts/82g pace). At 21, Turris was playing in the AHL.

Either the rest of the league is getting steal after steal, or Ottawa just got its pocketbook swiped.

$3.5M/year may or may not be a bargain down the road. That's the point. $2M for 1 year will let you find out the same info. How's Turris going to say no? He'd have to beat 30B 20A to even flinch at $3.5/year at the end of the season.

You guys are missing the main point, this is over 5 years. Ottawa obviously believes in Turris or they wouldn't have signed this. They are hoping they may overpay for the first year or two but will have a bargain for the last 2 to three years.

Bingo! We have a winner. All you armchair GMs need to relax. This deal is for 5 years. Obviously the Sens believe this will be a steal for them by year 3

Signings like these based on potential (with little to no actual performance) is exactly what has got the NHL into this mess and is what will continue to cause issues between the League and PA. There has to be some basis in reality for a signing and right now there is none, it's a bunch of folks tossing the dice around hoping that they'll get lucky down the road with no regard to the short term ramifications. It simply does not and will not ever work in the NHL business model.
