Which HOFer auto is the next to take a drastic price dive?

Who's it gonna be?

Yeah I know I've been starting a lot of polls lately :dizzy:

Anyways, I was curious to see who you guys felt would be the next high profile HOFer to see a dive in his auto prices similar to what we saw with Gordie Howe last season. I see this spread out in dozens of threads, but we've never brought it all together and discussed it in one place.

My personal feeling (and I see it happening already) is Mario Lemieux. Despite the fact that he was exclusive with ITG a few years ago, and he's been signing very limited amounts of autos, you can see the prices of his autos starting to make their way downward into that $40 range we saw some of Howe's autos go last year. I feel he'll hit those levels before the likes of Messier, Orr and co. do.

If not Lemieux, probably Tretiak. His autos still command alright dollar depending on the set, but seeing some of the Superlative autos sell in the neighborhood of $40ish make me wonder if he hit his sales peak a little while ago too.

Thoughts?

Definitely Lemieux!

ITG pumps out a ridiculous amount of Lemieux autos in each and every product. Now that he is also included in UD products he has a tonne of autographs out there. You can easily pick up a Lemieux auto for less than a $100 now. I just recently snagged the superlative auto for only $70. There is way too much Lemieux stuff coming out, no way he'll hold value.

I hope it's Lemieux cause I still need to add one of his autos into my collection! :D

I picked Messier.... I still think his "Old" auto stuff from 00-01 and 01-02 are always gonna sell well because he is a SSP in all of those sets and they are hard signed popular sets. His newer 07-08 Auto stuff is becoming more and more common. You can pick up a SOTT for $50-$75 bucks. Give it a few months and I bet that comes down even lower....

to me its Mr. Roy..

He cant seem to put the pen down since retiring.

ITG Donruss american, celebrity cuts and UD.. Market is already saturated and will only get worse! Just look at those Donruss prices spiral in a few weeks when newness wears off

Lemieux and Messier both! Too much out there now. 3 years ago I had to pay $300-$400 for a BAP Lemieux auto Emblem /5 from the Magnificent series, I seen one go the other day for under $150....It's a hard signed auto Emblem out of 5 for crying out loud!

Hes not in yet but I think Bure is going to be bargain bin material in a few years. Which is sad, considering his outstanding career.

I'll agree with Lemieux but I think it's his *newer* autographs you'll see sell cheaper. As a longtime Lemieux auto collector I've discovered that Lemieux collectors don't often let stuff go cheaply....so his earlier auto/game-used like those found in Parkhurst issues and the SP'd autos in BAP will always demand a premium because there is a high demand for those and a very limited supply.

For the survey I choose Messier. His stuff carries a premium now because he's signed so very little in the past. But there are not near as many Messier collectors as Lemieux, Gretz, Roy, so once his autos start appearing regularly you'll see him settle in around the levels of the current NHL stars.

lol, you love to include Patrick Stefan in everything dont cha? Well I think he should be in the Hall of Fame for biggest screw up ever XD

But yeah I agree with Lemieux, so many auto's out there. Next will probably be Roy, then Messier.

I agree that Lemieux's autos are dropping down, because well I've bought several in the past couple months, all under $40 except one which was $77, and it was out of 10. I don't totally understand it though, I mean his career wasn't too bad at all I'd say, and most would put him next after Gretzky. Gretzky doesn't have a ton of auto'd stuff out there, right? LOL!!! I'll bet he has way more than Lemieux, so why such a difference in pricing? I really don't get the mentality of some people when it comes to these things. Gretzky, Rocket Richard, and Orr autos are usually up over $100 in ebay sales, yet Lemieux is $40ish now??? What's rediculous IMO, is the prices of Crosby, Malkin, Ovechkin, Tavares, Stamkos autos. I mean come on, does anyone really feel that Crosby's auto is really worth 3X's more than Lemieux's auto? Maybe in 15 years from now when he has numbers to compare, but he's done nothing in comparison to Lemieux's accomplishments yet, and may never get to that pedestal. His stuff along with all the new young guns is way over-priced. :| I'll buy 3 Mario autos any day of the week before I'll buy one Crosby for the same price as those 3.

I voted all of them. Part of it has to do with the proliferation of autos, but another part of it has to do with the new generation of collectors who covet Crosby more than any other. This means that there will be more hitting the secondary market, which will satisfy the needs of veteran collectors.

I voted all. As more and more autos come out of these guys each year, there is less and less demand, as those collectors on the margin, who are willing to pay x to get any auto of player y are satiated. Personally, I think UD should limit any retired player to not more than 150 autographed cards total - released each year across all sets, and production runs. Of course, UD won't do that because those autos help drive demand, but I have to think in the long run UD would be better off if those secondary market values stayed higher.

It is sad that each of these great hockey players autos become worth so little!! Every product has them in it. Last year it was ORR and Lemieux and this year it is Messier!! Think of this way, how much will crosby, ovechkin, price or any young star be worth down the road, not much unless it is rookie or shield ( and that is debatable) The good thing is it makes it more affordable for people to have their autos. They will only go up when they either do not sign anymore for any number of reasons. Even Gretzky, his auto value has dropped since his first few auto cards came out.
My 2 cents, it only is a bad thing if you were one of the lucky ones to buy older autos at a premium

I think the next big star to take a dip is Roy, just because I'd say Orr, Lemieux, and Messier are already in the process of taking a dive. As long as players keep signing more cards, the prices will drop. The likes of Jagr and Sundin will always be at a premium because they just don't sign anything and there's very little in the way of their autographs available.

Interesting poll so far. Messier and Lemieux seem to be the popular choices right now, followed by Patrick Roy and er...Patrik Stefan :o

I'm surprised at the lack of Tretiak votes to be honest.

I would love for them all to drop drastically. Over the past 7-8 years its amazing to see how much auto's and GU have dropped. Over the past 3-4 years auto's and GU have become really affordable, its great. Makes me wonder the future for these super high end products. Seems like they are destined to become extinct real soon.

Look at young players like Lecavalier, Iginla, Heatley, Spezza, Thornton, Kovalchuk etc... their auto's are easily found for $10 or less. Sure some still sell for decent money but that is out of the super high end products where the pack/box price still makes these cards affordable as singles.
