Again, if they had done this say in March, McDavid would be in the set. They CAN'T have live cards of his until he plays an NHL game
That's probably part of the point - the McDavid cards don't become the focal point in the set, overshadowing their endorser in Crosby. But it doesn't hurt to have that added chase element that will make it a desirable card in any case. As an NHL sponsor, Tim's was also looking to time the promotion in time for the start of the season.
I'm also guessing that with the set at 100 cards - they want to keep this going at least into January when they can then transition into the Roll Up The Rim promotion.
